Hey guys, put some bilsteins in the front of my 2012 a few years back and the other day I had the top of the strut pop through the tower. Wondering if anybody has seen this before and if you have any idea why parts I’ll need for the fix. Looks like it sheared some of the shaft with it.

Thanks for any input

Is there a washer betweem the nut on top and the top of the perch?
If the answer is yes, the washer was supposed to be installed below the spring perch. This prevents what has happened in the pic above...or maybe it sheared off the washer.

Unfortunately, on your install the washer was forgotten on top of the shock. In the pic you can see the wear markings. If the other side didn’t pop through, you should take it apart and install it or your going to have issues with both sides.
As for a fix, I’ve seen people use an over sided washer to prevent it coming though the shock tower.

I know the washers were there on install, it didn’t happen from everyday driving, I hit a rut I didn’t see driving back to a site on the property the other day and this was the result. Budget can be whatever I need, I was expecting to buy a new shock or maybe the pair at this point. Does it look like the top sheared off to you?

So your saying if you have Bils and hit a pot hole really hard this can happen?

The stock struts shaft is machined down on the end and threaded. This makes it have a step to prevent it from going thru the mounting hole. The Bilstein 5100 isn’t exactly the same dia so they give you a washer that goes on top of the stud before you reassemble and put the top on. Some people don’t put the washer on first, they put it on after the top but below the but incorrectly and then this will allow it to breech that hole in the frame mount. His doesn’t “appear” to have had the washer at all.

The Bilstein 6112 doesn’t use this washer because the shaft is a much larger dia and machined down like stock to provide that step so it’s not an issue with those. The body itself is 2.75” dia.

How much and where do they sell the 6112's? Seen a couple sites where they sell it complete with springs ready to drop in for $700+. Do they sell just the shocks?
