Hello folks.... New to the site and my first post so forgive me if there is a subject similar to this one somewhere.... My ole' ram is a 2003 4.7 liter.... Last summer I was late for work and gave it a real hot breakfast and blew the lower hose.... Needless to say it got hot....I now have hardly any heat and its kind ofrandom.... Sometimes I do sometimes is barely warm.I also have the gurgling sound in heater core... I changed the lower hose, thermostat. Water pump... I tore it down did a head job with all new gaskets and planed the heads. Replaced the expqnsion tank last yr. Radiator isn't a year old and heater core is approx 5 yrs old.... I know everyone is going to tell me air is in there I need to know how to get it out lol...

One way to remove air is to remove the expansion tank cap, turn on the engine and let it warm up. When the thermostat opens the level will drop and circulation should move the air to the tank. Top off the tank to the warm level and run it a bit more.

Then let it cool down, warm it up one more time and watch the level.

Also, some of these engines have a bleed screw near the thermostat housing. You can open that up and follow the same procedure. Once fluid starts to flow from the bleed screw then the air should be gone from the system.

Much appreciated.... However I've done this.... When refilling the system I filled system started truck let engine run with heat settings on and watched tank as t stat opened I continued filling system.... As for the bleed screw on the upper hose housing when I crack that I get nothing but steady fluid... Any other ideas.... I do believe I also have an issue with blend doors being drivers side is cold and pas is warm sometimes

That would be my next concern if the system was bled.

The blend doors not working, or partially working, create flow problems.

Does the truck overheat now?

Any info you can give me as I prepare to tear down the dash and attack the blend doors.... As to which ones and locations I should target

to finally purge the air on my LHS, I had to drive up a steep incline. there was a big burp and all of sudden I had heat out the defroster.

When refilling you not only have to getthe engine hot but you also have to rev it up to 2000rpm for pretty good while to rid yourself of the air that can be trapped.

I might do a Heater core flush (push clean water through the core's outlet and catch the dirt and grime the other end). Some CLR can help declogging the core as well. Put the CLR through the outlet, let sit for a few minutes and rinse. Repeat as needed.

I would do that before taking the dash apart as it is a pita in those trucks.

However if you end up having to take everything apart inside the truck, do a little Google for "Heater Treater". a 100$ well spent IMHO.

+1 for heatertreater.com I did all 4 doors on mine. Also a trick the guy who owns the company said is, once you clean the core (let the chemicals work overnight), hookup the core hoses backwards. The way the heater works is the back half of the core controls drivers side heat, the start is the passenger. He feels that since the driver side is further, and the flow usually gets blocked up on that side, to have the flow start there.

Reverse actually made a big difference on mine.

Thanks folks.... Appreciate the info.... Tore dash down thmorning...ing checked all motors And doors and everything was in much better shape than I had Expected.... Gonna try a back flush on heater core in the morning
