Redline does reccomend the D6 ATF in the ZF8HP70 transmission. Mopar sticker on the transmission even says use only Mopar 8 and 9 speed fluid in it. According to that they do not even support the ZF lifeguard 8 fluid. Sounds like a warranty racket to me.
News to me , I'm unaware of a Redline ATF for the 8 speed xsmn ?

Mopar doesn't make any of their own fluids. I'm pretty sure it's the same wolf, just in sheep's clothing.

On redlines site the tell say to use the C+ in the BW 44-44 transfer case.
The transfer cases in these are very simple and don't require anything real specific. The ZF, on the other hand, is a very different beast.

"I was wrong once in the 80's..."

Ha ha ha , I was wrong once in the late 90's , a short time later I proved that I was actually not wrong at all ....you see my one mistake EVER was thinking I was wrong [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
Since I was the one who proved myself as actually being correct , I marked it up as never having been " wrong " in the first place . LOL I'm still waiting on my first mistake .
Did I mention my greatest quality is modesty [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji16]

We NEED to find him and get his experiences posted here
Found him here. Forum member SMI is the one with the most miles, (240k+) but there are some others with 150k+ on their 6.4's already too. He just posted 3 days ago... unfortunately, he had to have a head, lifters, cam, etc., replaced. He has lifetime warranty, so all that only cost him $100. Pretty impressive. He says out of that 240k+ mi, less than 500 was without his double car hauler on it. He runs M1 w/fram 4-7k oci. Check out the thread if you want to hear about the 6.4 long haulers.

Sounds like you've gotta lot of mile's to put on youres, better get busy. I'm kinda surprised that they'd offer a lifetime warranty for commercial use. So much for haveing to use Pennzoil to keep you're warranty intact. I'm thinking it's not been dealer serviced also. I think alot are worrying about alot of non issues.

So the SIM guy has 250,000 on his 6.4 now, averages about 16,000mi a month. Here is the most interesting thing I have found from him.

“They replaced the right head after doing a leak down test.
After they removed the head, they found additional problems.

The cam shaft was in very bad shape. It looked like it had been running without oil. All of the lobes were pitted and scared. the cam bearing surfaces were fine.

They replaced the right head, cam shaft, lifters and push rods. In addition, the radiator had a crack on the top, so it was replaced also. This all was done around 235,000 miles.”

He runs Mobil 1 0W-40 with Fram Filter, with 4K-7k oil change, he always has a 2 car bumper pull trailer hooked to it, which always has cars on it.

Thoughts on if his oil choice was different would he have same issues?

Yeah that's what I found as well. 72 ppm of moly isn't the greatest but at least it's there. The zinc is almost 1000ppm so that didn't stop the cam from getting wiped...

1100-1300 zink , 1000 phosphorus and 450 - 550 Molybdenum is what super oils had just 5-10 yrs ago . Well not that level of Molybdenum the moly was a select few oils .

Looks like Mobil 1 didn’t help or really hurt. I mean at 235,000 hard miles, can’t really be too upset. That probably way more miles than I or a lot of us will put on ours.

I mean he put 500 miles on it without a trailer! LoL that is 0.002% of his total miles! I have all the faith if I keep using good oil, and change it with a good filter, and put good fluids in all my other parts my truck will last longer than I’ll need it to!

I think he may get away with not being considered "commercial use" because he's under 26k lbs, so no DOT or CDL required. I do wonder what proof of maintenance the dealership asked for, although they'd be able to tell if the oil was kept up on as soon as they removed a valve cover with that many miles. I'd say considering all things and the conditions that truck was operated under, that wear is acceptable. It does make you wonder what a "better" oil and filter would have netted.

I don't believe a different oil would have prevented this.
