i HAD the same problem....cable kept gettin stuck between the cylinder and the bed body by the taillight.....fixed it. just undid the top end of the tailgate cable and slightly bent outward the bracket so that the cable travels to the outside of the cylinder.......with just the right amout of bracket bend, it works great.....dont even need the sleeve that DeeZee supplies to squeeze around the cable....

Had the same problem and the same fix. Just grabbed the top of the cable and bent it out a little so that it flows to the outside of the cylinder works great now. Before it would get stuck with the protector and pop the cylinder off.

Well worth it. And for the price, can't beat it. It has nothing to do with helping you close the tailgate. It's for opening the tailgate. Without it you HAVE to hold onto the tailgate to open it or else it will slam down (and as other have pointed out, destroy anything sitting on your bumper or worse, mess up the paint on the tailgate). Now even with my hands full i can pull the handle with my pinky and step back and the tailgate gently glides down. It's also a lot safer with my kids around since nobody is going to get hit with the tailgate should it not latch closed when i push it up. I have a hard tonneau cover that requires you slam the tailgate shut a little harder. If you don't it will fall open if you drive away or even bump into it.

That stupid sleeve SUCKS. When i had it installed it kept popping the cylinder off the ball stud. So i'd go to open the tailgate and expected it to open gently and SLAM!. Took it off and have had zero issues.

I paid $25 from Amazon Canada for a genuine one, so that price does not seem fishy.
