Tailgate thefts rose sharply in 2013

Here is a press release of interest to all of us.

Pickup truck tailgate thefts up sharply in 2013 | Fox News

My tailgate has the automatic locking system integrated with the truck locks they speak about but I still went out and spent another $20 for piece of mind. I know there are a few tailgate locks out there but I use the McGard. Easy to install and took about 5 minutes, literally. For the benefit of those that don't have a lock, if you know of a different tailgate lock post it here, the cost and how you like it. I'd like this thread out there so people can find it. Here's the one I use.

I keep mine locked too. But I still have a stainless hose clamp on it just in case I forget. Exact same location as the one you posted. And super super cheap. Yours does look a lot better, though. I even ground down the screw part so it can't be unscrewed.

Link didn't work for me, do you take out the factory lock? Or it's additional locking?

I absolutely fu*king hate thieves. Maybe their face going into a tailgate is the best lock....

No this actually is a clamp that wraps around the tailgate hinge but it is tightened with a key much like a wheel lock. This is addition to your factory lock in case they break that.

Those locks are nifty. Nice bit of added insurance. I sure like that mine locks with the key fob.

A stainless hose clamp works great for cheap. Definitely slows down the theft enough to deter most cases of it IMO. Most tailgate thieves are expecting a grab and run, and probably don't even have a screwdriver with them.

I have one of Bak's covers, when it's down it is locked as well. Only way to get at anywhere but the back of the tailgate is to open the cover first. At least another way to slow someone down a little bit. I do like the idea of another layer of protection though, and that lock is cheap $ so that is a bonus.

Mine didn't have a lock. Some 09s didn't. Which makes no sense.

I installed the factory tailgate lock handle as soon as I got my bed cover.

I'm glad I had a lock already. A friend of mine used to keep all his expensive equipment in the back of his Ranger with a topper and all he had on it was a tailgate lock that went over the handle. Not to have to unload all his work equipment every night he used to park his truck near his window and sleep in a lazy boy chair every night in fear that he would be out of business in one night if someone got into his truck bed.

My FIL had his GMC tailgate stolen at a train park-n-ride lot while visiting us a couple years ago.
Between our factory handle lock and a stainless clamp, I feel pretty good. There's also that god-awful umbillical of wires to deal with.
(we had to remove it last year to fix the spray in liner and with 2 guys it was a PITA)

Unfortunately, suck ass thieves don't care about the harness. They'll just cut it and go. We'll be left with the mess of having to change our entire harness because they did a **** poor job of stealing. I don't even know what that would cost but I'd bet it connects to more than we'd like just to make it cost prohibitive. I also have the tailgate assist which holds the bed to the tailgate. That would be one more thing a thief would have to remove.

Unless they know it takes 2 sec with a small flat blade/key to pop the gas shock off, but yeah, I have that on there too.

These gates are easy to remove if unlocked. I take mine off when I go to the racetrack. I like the factory lock. My GMC doesn't lock and I keep a tool box in the bed under the tonneau cover that also doesn't lock. Luckily no one has ****** with it yet but now I'm going to figure out how to secure it like the Dodge.
