When I was @ the tranny shop yesterday, I noticed the was some kind of tape over some body holes & others are off or coming off.

Is this for preventing rust?

They are used for installation of nerf bars and the like. Unless, used to install accessories, the tape keeps out salt, dirt and other trash, to some degree.

I would think duct tape would suffice lol. Is there an automotive tape?

3M does make multiple automotive application tapes. The ones I know of are mostly double sided for moldings and ornaments.

However if you clean the surface thoroughly before applying, Duct tape will definitely be a very good solution. Get a good quality DT though... not the dollar store stuff.

! thing I would do before closing the open holes is stick a hose in there to get the dirt and grime out and then go in with a High Pressure air hose to dry out. You may even spray some grease coating before you close back the holes. Just make sure the drain ports facing down are not getting clogged or else you will get rust through in no time...

I wish the underside of my truck would look half as good as yours does...

I think actual heating duct tape will work, I was thinking of the material duct tape, that does not last a long time.

& The bottom looks awesome, & want to keep it that way.
