Hey everyone I was hoping to get some advice from you guys. I am thinking about picking up a 2012 ram express crew cab for $23,777. I think that is an ok price but the only draw back is it is 2x4. So I live in Lincoln Ca no snow, wet winters but I only really drive on paved roads. I do own a 85 4runner that is upgraded for Crawling so I will be using that to beat up. You guys think I should spend the extra $ for the 4x4 which is going for 32,777. Thanks in advance for the advice thanks guys.

After decades of owning 4X4s my new truck is now a 4X2. I just don't use it like I used to and it made no sense to pay extra for it. Remember, you pay more in maintenance, gas mileage and insurance on top of the initial higher cost at purchase time. If you really don't need it then save your money for other things you might want to do to your truck. The only other consideration I would give is if 4X2 trucks in your area are in considerably less demand. That will hurt your resale greatly and you might be better off with a 4X4. Otherwise, I would go without it.

I had the same debate with myself for about a week. Well I went with the 4X2, I dont NEED the 4X4 considering the are I live in, ALOT (not all) of people in my area buy 4x4 cause of man pride (which was hard for me to put aside) plus they rarely use it if not rarely never... If the neccesity for 4x4 is there then go for it if not save that money for mods!!

agree with Butch, just get the 2 wheel drive but get the locker....that will help IF you get any bad roads....Ive never had a 4x4 and have made it many years never geting stuck. :)

Just over $23K is a great deal for a brand new 4 door...

Plus one here. I happen to use the 4-wheel almost daily and can't live with out it, however, if I was in a city, or didn't need it, wouldn't opt for it. They are heavier, and ride rougher, and cost more, and milage suffers a bit.

Like Gray says, though get at least a locker rear end, posi-traction, or something like that. Nothing like parking half on the shoulder in a truck, and having to call for a 6" tow!

Cheers,

Dude I faced that some bull s$$t when I went up there to buy my truck. I got a 2012 lonestar for 37,200 with a 6,500 dollar rebate so it was 33,000 out the door for a 4X4. I work on a farm part time so I needed it, but it's really all about what you wallet can afford.

I'm with everyone else, if you are keeping the ol 4 runner in case you ever need 4x4 I wouldn't spend the money for it. I have to get out to run a snowplow in the middle of the night is why I opted for the 4x4 but it sounds like you could do without it. May be able to save the money and get a 4x2 sport for about the same price as a 4x4 express and have a loaded truck? Just an idea.
