Looking for some advice! It's been a while since i have been on here(2 years) I traded my 2012 Ram 2500 with the 5.7 in on a 2013 Toyota Tundra and then traded it on a 2014 tundra crewmax with the 5.7. The Tundra is a pulling machine, but no aftermarket support and gas mileage is poor, so I'm thinking about coming back to the Ram. looking at a 2015 1500 5.7 3:92 gears, 2015 1500 3.0 ED and a 2015 2500 6.4 all 4x4's.

My question is what is going to suit me the best? I pull my 2 door jeep on a 20' car hauler (7000lbs)to the mountains twice a year and I take care of a hunting ranch here in Texas. I use my truck as a everyday driver and to haul feed out to the ranch. I do have a ranch truck that I use once I'm out there.

For pulling that weight (easily), I'd suggest the 6.4L 2500. Great trucks and pulling is not a problem for the weights you describe.

Good luck with your choice!

What gears would you go with 4:10 or 3:73?

I just moved from a 2500 HD to a 1500 because I only pulled a couple times a year and couldn't justify the cost and mpg out of the 2500. I have 1500 with the 3:92 8 speed and I does just fine pulling but as a daily driver I still get over 20 mpg compared to 8-12 in the 2500 Hemi I had.

I would think if your max towing weight is 7000 lbs 2-4 times a year, then I would just go for a 1500 Hemi or ED w/ 3.92's and call it a day. Unless you want the Mac Daddy 3/4 truck of course.

sorta what I was thinking. the ED sounds good, but with towing cap. at 7700lbs that's already at the top. Would love to have one just wish it was some where around 9200lbs.

I would stick with a 1500 at that weight. You will gain nothing mileage wise going to a 2500 so to me there wouldn't be a reason to trade. On the lower trims with 3.92 gears the ecodiesel's are rated over 8k. If you want a 2500 get the 4.10 gears, you gain nothing going to 3.73 gears, the mileage will be the same between the two essentially.

Is the 5.7 an option in the 1500 that will get you more towing capability, and with the 8 speed and 3:92's you mileage should be much better than the 2500 6.4.

6.4L with 3.73's would work well for that load. 4.10's might be a bit tall for regular use but it all depends on how often you will be towing.

Of course, the 4:10's get you about 3,000# of additional GCVWR capacity.

Nope! I have a friend that works for Toyota and if you know when to trade you can walk away not being upside down. Plus I don't half to trade nothing.:favorites13:

Sounds like you've got a good deal going then.

As much as you have traded recently the last couple of years, the math is not there for any savings when it comes to gas mileage and getting into a RAM.

Plus your last statement of not having to to trade nothing makes no sense.

I didn't wanna argue. I guess you just have to know "when to trade" to trade in a truck for something worth 10k more and be even.

That's my attitude while talking to salesman! I am not in a 10 year old truck that has 200,000 miles on it and need to trade. I really didn't think this is a thread on how many times I have traded in last few years.:)

The most important reason I trade is because I won't too and I can. :peace:

3 trucks in 2 years. I bet your negative equity added to the last one is a ton.

Your original post stated mileage as one of the factors of wanting to trade. My comment was to put in perspective the math is not there.

If you got new truck fever and it tickles your pickle to trade just for the sake of trading, that is your prerogative.

It's your story. I just know there is a huge difference in price on a 2013 tundra and a 2014 crewmax tundra.
