Getting ready to do rotors and pads on my 2016 4 x 4. The last time I did this was on a GMC and I got a nasty surprise, a factory bolt I could not remove without a huge hassle locking the rotors to the hub housing.

What surprises can I expect removing all four rotors? Hoping for an easy removal once the calipers are pulled.

Honestly, the Ram has been the easiest brake job I've ever done. Only issue I ran into was getting the rotors off due to them being rusted together, but that's not unique to the Ram in any way.

The rotors can be a real bear to remove. My brother showed me a great trick. Once the wheels are removed, spray PB blaster at the base of each stud so it works it's way behind the rotor. Then take an air hammer all over the face of the rotor and blast it for a while. This should loosen the rotor enough to come off fairly easily. Way more effective than trying to beat it off from behind with a hammer. When I reassembled mine I put a layer of anti seize on the back of the rotor. Don't know if it will help, but figured it can't hurt.

Overall a Ram is not that difficult. When I changed the brakes on my 2016 2500 4x4, I sprayed penetrating oil at the base of each of the lug studs and struck the rotor with a ball peen hammer between the studs in 3 different places, being careful not to hit the studs, and they came right off.

When I did mine the rears were a little difficult due to the emergency brake. But it got done.

Diesal fuel mixed with ATF tranny fluid in a cheap spray bottle makes a hell'va good penetrating fluid, that's every bit as good as any of the off shelf penetrating fluids.Diesal fuel is a hell'va wicking agent and will carrying the ATF into rust as good if not better then penetrating fluid

Going to add that to my list of things to try, makes sense but I've never heard it before.

I've heard it but never tried it. I have a stuck Honda 250 that I've been dumping pb blaster and aero kroil into to get to free up. I'm gonna give this a try! adea1b50b945e2ce1aa605e957fa02e6.jpg

That homemade penetrating oil trick has been around since I can remember and i'm 59,lol. I grew up in a farming community and my dad and pretty well every neighbour with-in a 100 mile radius used it,as every farm has a Diesal fuel tank and something that uses ATF tranny fluid, lol

Try filling the cylinder with good old Coke or Pepsi and let it sit for a day or 2,that's another old trick that sometimes works on a piston that's rusted into the cylinder.

Brakes should be completely serviced at least once a year including pulling the rear rotors to service park brake and not just when they're worn out.Keeps the rotors from seizing on the hubs, pads from seizing in the holders and pins from seizing in the caliper holders.

I don't have a lot of time on my hands to pound around on the rotors. Running a business and doing all the legwork means time is my nemesis. The rear rotors sound like a PITA.
Maybe I'll have it done.

Rears were easy enough, just back off the parking brake with a brake spoon before you take the rotors off. Just gotta remember to readjust them afterwards.
