The rim made out good. The way the tire became a big belt protected the rim.How did the rim take it?
That is the big question. Those 285 on a 20 rim look small on the 3500, but I'm nearly maxed out on towing my 5th wheel, and do not want to sacrifice anything in the towing/load capacities. Are you staying stock size or going larger?

I know the voices in my head aren’t real, but man, do they ever come up with some great ideas.
Nope, none of the above. Just a bad tire. That failure is usually caused by over loading , low pressure and some times a bad tire
With the 5yh wheel get the heaviest capacity tire you can and weight the axles when loaded for your trip
full of fuel , water , food and passengers
Four towing you you need a 10 ply. Not your standard load tire
On the way home from a fishing trip towing my boat my buddies truck blew out a BFG A/T on the rear and all the way around the tread came off except at one end and bashed in the bed side of his low miles very clean 99 Super Duty F-350. If we were closer to home I would have walked the rest of the way he was so po'ed!
Yup. These were E 10, 125/122R rated. Sad part is in this 40k miles, I didn't really work em hard. Mostly towing my car hauler and on occasion move my 5th wheel camper locally.Four towing you you need a 10 ply. Not your standard load tire

Yeah, I was rolling 75 on I-70. Not much traffic at midnight Saturday night. At first I thought my exhaust was falling off because I heard a low frequency drone. As it got loader, I turned off the radio. Just as I went to look at my temperature gauges, I felt it.Oh man that sucks! I was fortunate that mine didn't do any additional damage, but mine did happen at 75 mph while I was on the highway. Rush hour, passing people in the passing lane, just glad I got it under control.
