I had my local dealer do a diagnostic today to find solid reasons for overheating and coolant loss of up to 1/2 gal per 100 miles. Test confirmed the EGR cooler has a crack and is leaking coolant and the estimate for a replacement is $4,250. This truck has 126k so a delete is a no brainer for me as my county doesn't do emission testing...or, I could say to the environmentalist I'm retiring this vehicle to the family farm. Here's the kit I found for a reasonable $137...https://www.spelabautoparts.com/products/spelab-13-18-dodge-ram-6-7l-cummins-diesel-egr-plate-cooler-throttle-valve-delete-kit Saying I can do the removal/install, would I still need a tune or reprogramming?

Yes you would need tuning. On top of that most tuning I've heard of eliminates the SCR and DPF so you'll need the exhaust delete pipe also.

Coolers can be found for $600 and up or you could find a used one for cheaper.

A full delete kit may be around $1800 plus labor if you can find someone to do it. Most shops won't.
Good luck with your decision.

What year model Cummins are you talking about? When I let the junk fall off my 2011 I left the EGR cooler in place for a couple years, but eventually installed a cooler bypass kit and removed it. Only you can decide if you want to do a delete and tune to your pickup. In your circumstance you would have to remove it all and then tune. You could opt for a tuner that plugs into the OBD II port or have the tune flashed directly into the computer. I had a MiniMaxx tuner with monitor when I first deleted but after losing the head gasket and repair I had a tune flashed into my truck via EzLynk.
