I assume any topper from any year 4th gen will fit a 2018, 6-4 bed?

Be careful about the model differences RC, QC or CC. There are differences in the rear of the cab and one from a different cab configuration might not look quite right but they will all fit.

I assume any topper from any year 4th gen will fit a 2018, 6-4 bed?

I have a post recently probably on page 2 or 3 now if you look for it (has pics). But I bought a topper from a regular cab for my quad cab. They both were 6'4 beds so I didn't think much of it until I got home with it and noticed that there is a larger than there should be gap between the cab and shell as the regular cab apparently has a sharper angled forward cab than does a quad. Meaning my shell can't fit as close on the bottom (cab edge) as it should. So in order to keep my topper from hitting my cab I have to be back about 1/2 inch more than I should be. Not that noticeable from most angles but from directly on the sides you can see if if you are looking for it. It still fits, and most wont notice it but a quad shell definitely would have fit better.

I've been debating continuing to look for a quad topper or just try to get some rubber to fill the gap just to make it look cleaner. Like Ram does from the factory with the rubber between the bed and the cab. if I could find a thicker 1 inch weather strip or buy another piece of the rubber that goes between the bed and cab that might help. The cab/bed rubber would probably work best (since the truck already has it below) but I'm not sure how to attach it other than gluing it to the topper somehow. The bed one has a lip for it to attach to. The shell wouldn't.

I'm leaning towards just trying the rubber idea as like I said its not that big of a deal and I got a great deal on the topper. And I very rarely see a quad topper I like for a decent price and I look a often. So any will work but I'd look for one that matches if you haven't bought one yet.

I planned on sticking with a quad cab one. Just wanted to verify that the entire year range of 4th gen would work.

Should be good. I read even the 3rd gens will fit a 4th pretty close if you know which one to get.

So far all I can find in my area are 2nd gen or if they are 3rd gen they want 700-800 for it. No 4th gens.

I find a decent amount of 4ths but they usually want 1300 and they are usually the lower end models. Thats why I don't want to get rid of the one I have even though it doesn't fit perfect. It was 600 and is a newer model with the more modern frameless windows etc.

The guy originally had it for 1500. I thought it was a color match so I told him I was interested but once I found it wasn't a match I didn't talk to him anymore. Like a month later he dropped it to 1100 and I said maybe we can make a deal now. He said I'll give it to you for 600 so you can get it painted. I didn't even try to bargain I was like sweet lets do it.

I just picked up a topper this past weekend that was from a 97. It fits the bed fine but the back window does not lay flat because of the bump on top of the tailgate. For the money I paid I figure I can modify it to fit.

Did you figure out how to make it fit? I found a top for a second gen at a decent price.

Its weird how cap size vary buy area. Around here 6.4 caps are easy to find but the 5.7" are unicorns (used).

I found a used 5.7" for $500. It has some flaws but it works for my needs. And beats 2k+ new.

OP, not sure how you feel about canvas topper, but they can be had or less then a hard cap and allows access of the entire bed (height wise) when needed.

You don't want that rubber that attached to the topper to touch the cab of the truck, it will wear the paint off if it touches it.

Agree with crash68...been there, done that...those rubber boots have a way of wearing the paint away and there is typically one huge look of shock on the owners face when removing the topper for maintenance. And my only other word of caution is to stay away from Raider brand toppers as it is the only one (replaced by the dealer with a second which also leaked) which leaked badly at the front, around the windows and had a poor tailgate seal. Granted, this was in 1994 but I just have never liked the build quality as much as Leer, SnugTop, ARE, Century and ATC. Perhaps Raider has improved their quality but for me it was a case of once bitten, twice shy.

Anyone have pictures of a 3rd gen cap on a 4th gen? What needs to be modified if anything for it to fit. I have seen NO 4th gen caps for sale here in PA. Even the cap dealers say good luck with a 4th gen used.

Be sure to get the proper topper fit. Here is what happened when the shop accidentally put on a quad cab topper on my crew cab. The first picture is showing my Snugtop Hi Liner on the 6.4' crew cab 1500.

The later picture is of an ARE MX model in the wrong fit, a 6.4' quad cab cut. The crewcab and megacab have a curved contour, and the quad cab is more vertically straight. A little bit of a mistake from the shop, they put on a model for a quad cab on the first go. The fit is not good.

Make sure you get the proper fit. The owners of the topper shops here in Denver are great guys and run good businesses. We got it all worked out.
