Has anyone swapped in the later model 6 speed trans or know if its possible to do so? Would I be better off swapping in an entire 6.4l and trans combo? I currently have an 05 5.7 4x4 Laramie.
Tia for any help/suggestions!

If you decided to swap to a "later" 6-soeed trans it would still be a 5-speed trans with the current software in the PCM. The 65RFE, which is advertised as a 6-speed trans, actually operates exactly like the 545RFE which is a 5-speed. The 65RFE only gets to use the extra gear ratio while using ERS, or Electronic Range Selection.

There are some options out there to run the
8-speed 8HP70 from the RAM's and Charger or Challenger.

hotwireauto dot com has developed a kit but I don't have any other insight about their setup.

If you are mechanically inclined you could grab a donor vehicle with the engine and transmission combination that you want and then strip it. I would take the engine/trans and wiring harness and every single module from the donor vehicle. Perform the swap and then use HP Tuners to tune it and make everything work.

I have a customer's truck that I am doing this exact thing to right now. His truck is a 2006 and I am using a 2016 model for the swap. I completely gutted the 2016 RAM. So far I have the complete drivetrain in the truck along with the entire 4th Gen interior with the instrument panel. It can be done but needless to say it is time consuming for sure.

Thanks for the insight! Gives me something to think about!
Was the dash conversion difficult or were the cabs similar enough to make it doable?

The 4th Gen instrument panel is a direct fit bolt-in assembly to a 3rd Gen cab and so are the seats. I ended up using the 3rd Gen
A-Pillar trim panels that's came with the 2006 originally due to the fact that the 2016 was rolled in an accident and they were damaged.
