Hello, I have a 2016 Ram 1500 with the 6 cylinder engine. the vin number tells me that I have a two part filter with a sleeve but a mechanic told me that I have a bottom pan filter combo. ( more expensive of course) and that goes with an special oil, mid $20 a quart. Any input on this dilemma that I have will be greatly appreciated.

no dilemma, you have the 8 speed (all 3.6l trucks did) and it has a pan integrated filter and premium priced fluid.

If you're handy enough to change your own engine oil, you can DIY and save a lot of money. There are aftermarket pans available which are lower cost than OE, just make sure you google up how to do the service so you do it correctly as the transmission is fairly picky about exact fluid level.

more info on transmission fluids

Valvoline maxlife works just as good way cheaper. d6 is popular but a few rams say it shifts poorly. It is no easy matter for dyi, the largest challenge is simply checking the fluid level, lol. Yeah, it's a thing. If you have a dealer or shop that has a decent price on this, ask him if you can bring him 2 gallons of maxlife and save money on fluid.

The correct maxlife is "multi vehicle" one.
