Hey guys I hoping to buy either a 2nd or 3rd gen 4-speed Ram soon. How good are the trannys in the 2nd gens? Thanks

Looking at autos? Not very good stock, but with a good rebuild, cooler and torque converter can be made very good.

In that case you'd have to do the installs yourself or just look for a truck with a good transmission and hope for the best.

I'm debating on getting either a 2nd or 3rd gen, the 3rds (from what I know) have better trannys then the 2nds but they also rust easier. The 2nds don't have the best tranny but shouldn't rust as easy in the fenders and they are also cheaper. Is it worth waiting and keep saving money to get a 3rd gen?

I say that If you find a 2nd gen ram with a good tranny, and take care of it, do all the maintenance and stuff, obviously, you should be okay. At least long enough to gather some money in case of a rebuild.

Im lucky to have found a ram with only 75,*** miles when I bought it. (78,*** now a couple months later). I have zero issues. All though I've heard that they tend to go around 130k? Not sure how true that is. But really, see if you can find one with a good transmission and keep up with it.
