For the initial WDH set up, use the front fender height method to get the hitch in the ballpark. Measure the front wheel-well fender height from the ground of the truck before loading or attaching the trailer. Follow the manufacturers directions for adjusting the WDH to return the fender height back to the first measurement with the trailer attached. This is probably where the RV dealership stops.
With the truck and trailer fully loaded for camping with the WDH attached, find a local CAT weight scale. Then weigh both truck/trailer together then drop the trailer and then weigh just the truck. The initial weigh will cost about $13 then subsequent reweighs the same visit are about $3.
Your first calculations:
Add the front and rear axle weights of the truck w/trailer together then subtract the weight of just the truck(2nd time on scale). This will give you the tongue weight of the trailer, add that to the trailer axle weight for the total trailer weight. Divide the tongue weight by the total trailer weight then multiply by 100 to get the tongue weight percentage.
You want to have about 10% tongue weight, restore the lost front axle weight, and the rear axle should be heavier than the front.
Tightening up a WDH will increase the front axle weight, lower the rear axle weight, lower the tongue percentage and increase the trailer axle weight. For high rear axle weight, move anything in the bed to over the trailer axles. In some cases weight moved to behind the trailer axles will reduce tongue weight.
Some people say to weight a truck/trailer without the WDH engaged, it's not really needed as it would just show the difference between the WDH makes.
