I have an appt to have a new Mopar limited slip diff installed by a local Ram dealer tomorrow but I'm feeling unsure about it. They quoted a price of $313 for labor and a local off road shop quoted $325 so price is not an issue. My concern is should i trust the dealer to get it right or have the off road shop do it? I feel that if the dealer messes it up at least it's on them and they can't deny any repair work that may need to be done. Any opinions will be appreciated.

My dealer won't touch the rear end. I am in the West Chester, Pa area and can't find anyone that would put one in.

The dealer i bought the truck from won't do it either. Had to call another dealer and they said they'd do it.

Any decent stealership should do it. And they should be good at it with the rear penion recall my neighbour does them all the time, dodge driveline tech's should be really good at rebuilding the rear axles. I know personally 3 rams that have had full rebuilds due to the recall and just 1 locking retainer. Mine chewed the penion up, my co workers for chewed up also and racing buddy's penion sheared completely off. Purpose of the story is that they should know how to rebuild axles properly with how much they do them.

Just check service/maintenance reviews for the dealer and if things look pretty decent do it there. IMO as long as the dealer doesn't have horrible service reviews it is always best to go there over a private shop.

I feel the dealer did a good job with the install today but WOW did they gouge me in the wallet! Had them do a front diff fluid change also and between basic service charges, cost of fluids, rtv sealant, and taxes they got me for over $700. Bring your own fluids and rtv and it will be a LOT less expensive. I'll take it as a lesson learned and will know better next time.

Thanks for the info. The dealership said I would have to buy the whole rear axle assembly. I laughed and hung the phone up.

Anything that comes out of a dealership parts department is going to be expensive.

i find it really hard to believe that the dealer will do that for 313. Get that in writing prior to letting them have your truck.

It's already done. The cost of install without fluids, rtv sealant and taxes was $313. Everything else (fluids, rtv, etc) added up quick.

"Trust" and "dealer" are two words I've found to be incompatible. The entire automotive industry is built upon a history of not having the customer's best interest at heart. At best... it is a combative business relationship with unknown price/cost structure. Any business where the little old lady who comes in off the street pays the highest price is flawed in my opinion.

Just recognize it and protect yourself accordingly. Don't allow them to do anything that isn't in writing up front about cost.

The grand total after installing the rear diff, changing fluids in the front diff, all fluids and rtv sealant, and taxes was $722. The limited slip diff itself was another $499 from Moe's Performance.

just paid 450 for a rear diff/ring/pinion swap on mine. it's a specialty shop and that's all they do is diff work. Maybe look for something like that in yer area? wherever I went to inquire about the install, people referred me to them...go figure, must have a hell of a rep in this area for pretty much all I talked too mentioned them.

but got my parts from Moe's.
