Ok my truck is closing in on 3000 miles and im getting the urge to dump the original oil and going straight to a synthetic oil (which im still not sure about what brand)
Whats that dino oil i hear you all talking about? Is that just the OEM oil?

Been browsing some threads on guys using different oils and all its done is confuse me more about what oil to use. I imagine that i should stay with the 5w20 oil but which one?

Should i go ahead and change the oil or should i wait? My engine life still shows about 80%, checked the oil and it has begun to stain and show some color on it.

I have read some members will do their first oil change around the 1000-1500 mark after "breaking it in". Then not switch to synthetic until after the 2nd oil change

I've always waited until 10,000 miles to ensure everything is broken in before switching to synthetic, but that is just what I've always been told.

Always use the weight that's recommended by the manufacture, this case 5w20. I suggest Mobil One synthetic with Mobil One filters, it's always on sale at Walmart and readily available, stick with one brand for the rest of your trucks life, your engine will thank you and it will ease your confusion.

Dino oil or more correctly dyno oil is cheap oil that was used to run a car on the dynamometer. Somewhere down the line some folks who don't work on cars bastardized the meaning and called it dino oil meaning from biological sources. Either way it means low priced cheap oil, usually group 2. See my signature for information on oil and grouping. I changed my oil a couple times with very low miles until i switched to synthetic. Research the groups of oil, since you decided already on synthetic (good choice) research group 3,4 and 5 oils. Look up UOA's (used oil analysis) on whatever brand you are considering. You want an oil that after an extended time in an engine still has a good additive package and low acid. Anyone call tell you they are happy with their oil, but uoa's tell you what a quality oil is and is not. Once you choose an oil, consider spending 25 bones and get a uoa yourself on your oil in your engine after 10k miles on it. As equally important as your oil choice, find an oil filter with 100% synthetic media.

You can switch to synthetic at any time. Mile 1 or mile 10,000. Makes no difference. The engine is going to break in whether using conventional or synthetic.

I ended up going with Mobile 1 full synthetic. My local auto parts store doesnt carry Amsoil.

It will have to do. Still kinda pricy for Mobil 1. its about $9/qt. I found the 5+ qt jug for $35 at Auto Zone so i went with that. Tomorrow ill get the other 2qts and the filter so i can gather the Rewards points from AutoZone.

I have $20 off my next purchase so it'll end up being a pretty cheap synthetic oil change

Walmart always seems to be the best price on oil in 5 qt jugs. I was at Oreilly's and they said they price match but then when I said Walmart is where I saw it they said "we don't price match them." So annoying when a place says they price match but pick and choose. I would have been fine if they just don't price match.

I can get you Amsoil cheaper that $9 a quart if you want to use it.

I have said this before but so this thread includes it you can use 0W-20 and it is actually better if you can find it because it protects better on startup. This is true with any oil 0W is always compatible as long as the last number matches what is recommended.

I'm not saying you're wrong but wondering why it would protect better on startup?

I swapped to synthetic at 3300kms if I remember right. And if this winter is anything like last, I'm definitely switching to 0-20 in a couple months, the poor girl did NOT like starting at -40 without being plugged in
