My iPhone issues aside, Id like your opinions on upgrading to the 8.4 over the 5 that came with the truck. I really like the look of the oem 8.4 radio and it would fit with my updated (soon) instrument cluster.

But an aftermarket Alpine or Pioneer would be really nice and offer the better sound quality I am looking for.

Any thoughts?

It's kinda possible. Volume knob functionality goes bye bye with the 8.4 install. You'll have to install the steering wheel volume controls to turn it up and down. I think there's also something different with climate controls.

There's a whole thread on upgrading to the 8.4. I know there are some issues, but it looks right

to sum it up its not possible. there is more than a simple swap. sales code changes, possibly other changes internally to the truck also.

an aftermarket will be your best option it will give you a better sound and more sustainability for sound

I am sitting on an 8.4AN with the climate bezel but the climate harness is not compatible. While looking at the wiring diagram it seems there is a different setup but I never got very far. Jeepguy was going to look at it but may he RIP. I'm also considering trading mine for a truck with more options. For the time being I am using an iPhone 6 plus for my Nav.

As much as I would like the functions of the 8.4, looks like it's going to be aftermarket. For the price of one of these units, I can get a really nice Alpine or Pioneer deck.

Can you find an aftermarket that is compatible with the existing steering wheel controls? If so, which ones...

The 8.4 sucks anyway. On any trip over 2 hours my system fails in some way. Either the screen blacks out, I lose apps, entire system freezes or most recently, I lose the volume knob and volume buttons on the steering wheel. Only way to get it back is to find a spot to pull over, shut off the truck for 10 minutes and start again to fully reboot the 8.4

Another reason for going aftermarket, only get some of the advanced functions in Canada. No apps, no voice read texts. It's stupid because OnStar works up here, but Dodge decided to make their comparable system US only.

The More I think about it the more aftermarket makes sense. I have iphone so navigation isn't important. I also don't have steering wheel volume control, so don't hafe to worry about that. I would have been nice to have the auto climate controls (with some hacking) and the "factory" look. But since I plan on upgrading the speakers, adding a couple of amps and a sub, aftermarket baby.
