My buddy just picked up a 3rd Gen 1500 with the V6. I don't know anything about them and was just wondering if anyone knew the best parts for those.

He's looking into doing a muffler and probably an air intake of some sort. He's a beginner and any input would be greatly appreciated.

Any muffler that won't make it sound like a V6 camaro with a flowmaster lol. Can't stand that sound!

I had a v6 1500 quad cab, severely underpowered. Kept it completely stock for that reason. Getting good sound out of it would be a pain i imagine

Don't bother with a muffler or intake. I've been there, done that with my 2002. The best thing to get that heavy under powered moving easier is swapping to a shorter rear gear set.

My rear end blew up on my 3.7 with the 3.21's. I went with 4.56 and its a totally different animal, best thing i ever did to it and itll get out of its own way now. I worked at an exhaust shop for while and played with different setups for a few weeks to find a decent exhaust note. i went with a 14" magnaflow DI/SO and removed the y pipe and went with a 2.5" tailpipe all the way back. It sounds really deep at idle and just normal driving it sounds great and isnt raspy and obnoxious like your typical v6 with an exhaust

X2...and maybe a converter swap (if it isn't a 42RLE). The 3.7 powerband starts a bit higher in the rev range.

Magnaflows don't sound terrible on the V6 like a Flowmaster.

I would go custom. ditch the y pipe and go with a di/so 14" magnflow with a new tailpipe

Ill take a few videos of my truck at cold start and normal temp. Sounds nothing like a v6 both at idle and driving around town. Ive had several people question what was under the hood and one guy even asked if it was a hemi. I got rid of the y just because it was easier when i worked at an exhaust shop. i tried several different mufflers with the main focus being i didnt want something that sounded like a pepboys special. Any sort of chambered muffler (flowmaster, cherry bomb, dynomax, etc) sounds like total garbage. I had the best luck with magnaflows. I had the 18" at first and it was mellow but i wanted a little more tone and went with a 14" di/so. If you want it to sound interesting and exotic, a borla will give you that sound. Loud and obnoxious would be a banks monster muffler.

And is all that with just the exhaust system you have? it almost sounds too good to be true! No gear changes or air intakes?

Thats just the exhaust. No intake, only a k&n panel filter so i can reuse it. I regeared to 4.56 after i had a pinion bearing fail. It was the best thing i ever did to it, night and day difference. It revs a little high on the highway, 4.10 probably would have been a better choice for me. Its still a tiny underpowered v6 and everyday i wish i had bought the v8 but for what it sounds like now i cant complain

Yes mine is an 05, i didnt notice any power gain at all. Just a difference in noise. The real gains came from the gear swap. It has been sitting all week still covered in snow so ill clean it off and start it up

Gear change ran me $300 but thats parts only as i installed it myself. The swap wasnt as bad as everyone makes it out to be but the 4.56's require a little work to get the ring gear to fit in the housing. If i had to do it again id go with 4.10. I tried to get a video but apparently my phone wont record sound
