This is a true misconception. The 4x4 cost more up front, daily driving gets less mpg, in Iowa we "need" it 1-2 weeks a year but live with it all year long. The resale is not enough to make up for any of those costs down the road.
It is a personal thing for each person to choose that is why they make them that way.
I do agree that Chrysler needs to learn to build what the people want.
Depends where you live I can tell you in the north you can hardly give away a 2wd truck or SUV they may have NADA value and KBB value but here they simply are the black sheep and are very rarely sought after. Texas maybe but not here. I use my 4wd or at least Auto to be on the safe side probably 6 to 8 months out of the year. I could get by with a 2wd but they are a death trap on ice and get stuck a lot easier here. Front wheel drive is doable but rear is garbage.

Did a dealer search 100 miles from Des Moines for 2011 trucks and here is how they stacked up Chevy 352 - Ford 75 and Dodge 35 These are just the 1/2 ton varieties. Sorry did not do GMC but they are rarer around here because of the dealer network on them.
