Well, if you're fairly handy with tools and have a drill with some the proper bits this can be installed in about a half day or so.
The problem is hanging those long tail pipes and getting everything to look even...the drivers side is particularly problematic. The wieght of those pipes is tough on hangers too.
If you just want "a bit of growl" install a single outlet system. Most use the stock hang points. The difference in power on a stock or mildly modded truck is insignificant from the dual outlet, and most single systems dyno in more botton end torque.
I wish I'd done that, and when the dual out system I have rots out, will go back to a big single.

it would definitely sound better, but flowmasters have a reputation of rusting out quickly

You should run this set by your local muffler shops and price shop. Maybe someone's hungry today...

seems like a decent price for a muffler back set up, but if i were you, i would look into cat back or full exhaust including headers and true dual it. If you just want more growl, go with a single outlet turn out that pops out behind the rear wheel and get a true cat back system with high flow cats. Yes, it will cost more to buy new cats, but chances are, your stock cats are getting clogged up and stealing power from you. Check your local laws, i know where i am, i'm emissions controlled, but a couple miles down the road there are no emissions controls. IE, you can legally remove all of your emission regulated equipment that steal power and efficiency. However, i think Washington is one of the few states that do this, the east coast and the south (and california especially) can get really into emissions, while other states could care less. Some states just driving a vehicle without emissions equipment is illegal, even though where your vehicle is registered to it is legal. know your laws if you remove emissions equipment, otherwise be safe and put some high flow cats, and good muffler, and open up your rear pipes. A single will sound good, true dual will sound best, splitting the pipes after the muffler is purely for looks, if you want sound go single or true dual all the way

Thanks for the advice. I was concerned about it being difficult to hang that dual pipe with the gas tank and spare tire location. I usually do all my mechanical stuff myself but haven't tackled exhaust before. Can anyone recommended a fair priced single out system? There's no emission testing in my area. Truck has 104,000 miles.

Summit and LMC truck sell them among others. Summit will have the best price on a single outlet. All are "catback" systems.

I never recommend removing the cat for straight pipes unless it is an off road application. Sorry folks! A 96 with a closed loop OBD 1 system probably won't gain much power from a cat removal, the opposite may be true!

I think the cheapset route may be just to replace your stock muffler with a turbo muffler or similar, and have 'em bend a new tailpipe. Should be cheaper then 200 bucks!

I looked online and it appears I can buy the muffler and pipe to fit for well under the price of one of the kits. Might even put a glass pack on.

How can I tell it the cat needs replacement? I banged on it and it doesn't rattle.

Yes a nice muffler and new piping from your local muffler shop might be cheaper. I have a single in/out Flow master 40 on mine that exit before the right rear tire. I did this for less bending as the muffler shop did not have mandrel bending. It has more growl than stock for sure.

Depends on what your taste is and your budget of course.

Oh and if your cat is not rattling its probably still good.
