what does this mean?

Lately I'm hearing a banging but not loud.more like muffler banging into something near the back right of the truck. I only hear this when turning right and going over bumps. I decided to raise the rear end and take a look. So I grab my driverside rear wheel and spin it and all seems fine no play. But I can see the passenger side tire and this didn't stop when I stop spiking the drivers side. So I go grab the passenger side tire and I can feel at least an inch or two play in this tire. I'm able to spin from right to left at least two inches without the other tire moving. Is this normal?

I would open the differential and check for broken spider gears.... I don't believe it should have that much play to it.

If I do have broken spider gears does that mean I need all new gears in the rear?

Not necessarily.... If the.broken spider gear chipped a gear on the ring or pinion gears then yes you will. But if not then it's just have new spider gears installed.
