87 acceptable, 89 recommended. Page 252 in Manuel ( not sounding like a jerk)

I only know because it’s the first thing I look at when buying a vehicle.

Yup.

Wifes 5.7L durango calls for 89 recommended as well. Even with less power than the Ram.

IIRC The 6.4L calls for different octance depending on the vehicle. 6.4L in the Jeep/Cars is 91+.

I was just about to ask this question in a post when I found this one. Does anyone know what constitutes the difference in recommended vs. acceptable? Even though 89 recommended, are most using 87? It's about a .20 savings per gallon at the Shell station where I usually get gas.

It usually is a small increase in power and mileage if you use the 89 that is recommended.

I am tuned for 93 on mine, have no automotive issues, and the truck is a joy to drive. I got used to the $$ a while back. Next truck (6.4L 2500) will be a tamer 89 octane-sucking towbeast.

My Ecoboost can adjust power levels based on what octane gas is being burned. Anything like that with Ram? 89 or 87 recommended
No, Ford is the only manufacturer from the big 3 that uses that approach, you'll find the same thing in most of their hi performance offerings, (Focus ST, Mustang 5.0, Ecoboost etc, don't know if it's a Ford thing across their entire lineup), Dodge or Chevy only account for knock in the system, so they cut timing accordingly when need it, that's how they can adjust for different octanes.
Ford on ther side is always testing it can add more timing based on octane, so if you pump higher octane, they can add more timing and test for knock as well, fairly neat concept.

I run my RAM with 91, (tuned), but to my surprise, i was seeing 2* knock at WOT from 4200-4500rpm all the way to redline on 91 octane with factory timing. i'll test with factory -2* and see how the knock retard logs looks like at WOT.

Also, depends on your altitude. 87 is mid grade here while 85 is low grade. I am running what a chain here has called clear gas. It is 88 octane with no ethanol in it. Truck runs great.

I run 87. I'll be curious to see the difference if any with switching to mid. My 6spd manual hemi calls for the primo stuff, only the sticks though and I believe I'm rated at 3 more HP than the 8spd ZF challengers. Interesting side note a lot of folks don't know. There are only 2 grades of gas (generally speaking and in my area). Low and High. The mid that is offered is mixed on site with the two grades when you grab the mid grade handle. I read somewhere that you can save some bucks by mixing the gas yourself as opposed to pumping the midgrade. Not worth the effort IMO.

I use 87 and have used 87 for years in my old Ram and Charger... no issues.

No ya wouldn’t have/see any issues. It’s more about the octane helps fuel mileage as well as helping to keep the valves clean. JMHO

2014 5.7 with close to 75,000 miles. Have run nothing but 87 and had no issues. I have never towed anything. And, I don't haul anything. I do have a large cross box that adds a few pounds.

I run 93 always. might be pointless, but I just do it. I usually have some sort of tune or performance upgrade anyway so I prefer high octane.
