i have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 and i have a 2.5" coil spacer and a 2" block in the back. i currently have 35" bfg all terrains on my stock wheels but they're worn down and they rub on the lower control arm when i turn hard. i got new bfg all terrains (not mounted yet) and im looking to get new rims. the new rims need to be 16x8", im wodnering what offset/ backspacing should i get to pull the tires away more so they dont rub. with the new tires the tread is much much more aggresive than the old ones obviously so the rubbing is going to be more harsh. any suggestions on wheels? i need a 5x5.5 lug pattern

You'd need a wheel with at least 4.5" backspacing to get them to stop rubbing on the control arms. I've got a set of Mickey Thompsons in 16x10 on mine right now

thanks, just the answer i was looking for.
i found rims that were 16x8 with a backspacing of 4 7/16". so just slightly below 4.5". that should be ok right?

You should be alright with the 1/16" difference. You might rub a little on full lock if you've got the suspension flexed any but I don't see it being an issue with normal driving

Not to steal the thread or anything but since it is the same topic, what's the difference between offset and backspacing?

I agree with bluesmoke, I could use some knowledge on that. is there a way to find out backspacing if you only have the wheel specs and not the wheel in front of you? a lot of sights don't include backspace in the specs of their wheels

The offset of a wheel is the measurement from the center line of the wheel to the wheels mounting pad measured in millimeters.

Backspacing is the measurement from the wheels mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel.

So with either measurement, you could figure the other out.
