I'm currently using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 with that tiny oil filter Mopar recommends. Changing every 2000miles until I get 10k on the odometer. I've always used Valvoline oil in my vehicles and Champ XL filters. It seems like most of the 0w40 oils are Euro blends and I'm not sure if they're okay even though they appear to be SN or SP rated. I'm also considering running 5w40 in the summer months since it has better shear stability. I change my oil and filter every 4k miles and am wondering what everybody else is using. I'd also like a filter # if you've found a larger filter that fits the 6.4.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 meets MS-A0921 spec and it can be used year round even in cold upstate NY so not sure why your worried, as for oil filters IMHO there are better quality oil filters for you to use, what one is up to you, royal purple, fram or fleetguard..

My biggest concern is the oil shearing out of viscosity. It's my understanding ( according to Lake Speed Jr.) that 0w40 oil regardless of brand is more prone to shearing than other multi- viscosities. I guess I may be worrying over nothing since I change my oil every 4k after break-in. As far as filters go Champ is as good as any other filter out there when the oil is being changed at regular intervals. They actually make some of OEM and other brands filters and are owned by the same company as Fram.

I ran 5W-30 Redline with a Royal Purple 20-820 filter on the wifes 6.4 Challenger, and it was definitely happier on it then when it was on PUP 0W-40 and the Mopar SRT filter.
Car was also on a 50 shot of nitrous, and she beat the living hell out of it on the street and at the track,up till she shattered her leg,she was racing it every week-end,and doing a fair bit of street racing with it.

I did just read that I can use the same oil filter as my 5.7 hemi on the 6.4. I've got about another 500 miles before the next change and I'm hoping that's true. I couldn't believe how tiny that stock filter is for a 3/4 ton truck! I have about a 1/2 dozen of each so I'll go back to the small ones during break-in ( I'm changing every 2k till I hit 10k on the odometer, then I'll go to 4k regular changes) I plan on doing some heavy towing and it's going to see a lot of cold weather so I get paranoid about bearing wear.

Put an oil pan heater on it,they work better then a block heater in cold weather.

I'll tell you boys this, there is a company in my town that is literally called 'major brands oils co.'

They own a ton of the big ones and a ton of the store brand ones (Valvoline, pen, and Meijer to name a few)

So to me arguing about which oil is best is like arguing if a Chevy is better than a GMC

Many times, people get all emotional about what product is good or bad; motor oil seems to be a biggie.
I look back on advertising in the 60's and 70's, and remember all the catchy tunes and such that embedded themselves into our psyche.

"I am stuck on Bandaid 'cause Bandaid's stuck on me", "My balogna's got a first name, It's O S C A R...."

Those jingles evoke folks at a deep level. As to motor oil, back then, I remember "Amalie! Better than it has to be!".
Old Castrol commercials addressing engine heat.... all very powerful subliminal tricks to get you to buy their product.

Then, as little boys, we looked up to our older male role models and categorized them in the realm of Superhero.
Grandpa used Amalie when I was younger, and he not only endorsed it to others, he quoted the ad slogan.
Uncles, neighbor men, etc. were all complicit in helping form our later life choices.

Many years later, Amalie sludged up Grandpa's engine and the dealer who fixed the problem educated him to an unfortunate truth germane to that time period. Afterwards, he (Grandpa) used a different brand of oil.

There is no "super oil" which can overcome poor maintenance or sub-par engine design. As I read these recipes of boutique filters, and the witches brews of this or that weight mixed with "Ultra-Zoot" additives, I wonder if folks ever back way up and take a more panoramic view of the issue. Perhaps they do.

Maybe, just maybe, the answers aren't that difficult. I've come to realize over the years that technology changes everywhere. This is true of motor oil, too. But, I wonder; Is all this hype and prattle just a way to keep people fighting and overwhelmed with TMI (Too Much Info) so as to sell boutique products at sky high prices?

@Sherman Bird hey now Sherman this is no place for logical thinking.

I do run redline 5w30 in mine. It's noticeably quieter then the pup 0w40 I ran for many miles before switching. My truck is only used on the weekends so 5k miles a year or so. Paying the extra for one oil change a year isn't going to break the bank.

Man, I love your logic here. If I bought a brand new vehicle, I'd do something similar. The initial oil/filter changes are likely very important, plus they're dirt cheap, so why not go the extra mile.

During Covid, my best bud bought a '22 Toyota Tundra V-6 twin-turbo, and he waited until 11k miles for the first oil change, even after I badgered him like crazy. But the last laugh was on me, as Toyota ended up replacing his whole engine under a huge recall, lol.

I've had 2 oil changes since Mar 2023 when I bought mine, and I'm just now coming up on 12,000 miles because I don't drive any distance on a frequent basis. The first one was at about 4000 miles and I asked for Mobil 1, 0W-40, European Car Formula and that's when the mechanic found a leaking oil pan gasket. So I took it to the dealer under warranty at about 6000 miles because I was in the middle of moving cross-country and couldn't do it at that time. They had to change the oil to drop the pan and I don't know what oil they used. I'm getting ready to take it in for another oil change here in a week or so and will ask for either Pennzoil Platinum Plus, or Mobil 1 again.

Any quality oil filter will do.

I think the dealers and repair shops coax us into changing oil more frequently than is needed just to perpetuate their existence. I change my oil one a year and use full synthetic oil. 277,000 miles later, my Ram 1500 still hums along.
