I have a quick question for those of you that change your own oil: what drain plug gasket do you use? I plan on changing my oil myself for the first time the next time it’s due, so I want to have the right kind of gasket on hand so I can replace the old one.

Does the plug itself have to be replaced?

I keep a new plug in my workshop. Every oil change I run my fingers over the thread to how it feels. I the threads feel a bit different , .A sharp spot or anything not guiite right, I use the new one.

No the plug should be fine. What is your oil change interval, oil brand and oil filter your using?

Been my experience they do wear after awhile. Chinese metal and all.

Yea your right about that; I had an old 1985 ford ranger back in the day and when I got rid of it, it still had the original drain plug. The good old days.

Those days are long gone ! Lol

Installed Fumoto drain valve my first change. Should make things much easier now. 7 qts of oil in a pan is a spill waiting to happen. Just open valve into funnel into waist oil container.

How do these hold up to off-roading? I’m in brush and stuff sometimes. Hate for it to break off. But the idea is cool. Hmmmmm maybe a new mod lol

They will hold up to heavy brush. They do sell a locking collar that they recommend to use to eliminate any freak chance of actuating the open/close lever.

The valve itself is not that much lower then the pan.

Like Hoot stated they now make a clip that locks the (spring loaded) valve lever in place.

I can honestly say: I have had these valves installed on all of the family autos for over 20 some years with never an issue.
