Helping someone looking for a cheap work truck, what year 3rd gen is the best truck and engine to buy? Any specific years to avoid? Is the last year, 2008, the best?

Im driving a 2008, that was willed to me. 89K, no issues so far. I turn off the MDS around town, use it on the highway.

Imho I think 05-08 are pretty good, not too many gadgetries and pretty easy to repair, except for electrical gremlin's of course, lol...

My '07 is doing great w/out the Hemi Tick! This was the last year before the "hemi tick" began. 2007 fully made in USA.

I vote 2005, as it was the final year before MDS was added. It's all V8, all the time!

My 2007 MegaCab 5.7L HEMI didn't have MDS. It was a great truck and at 140K miles it still ran like a champ. I only had one sensor issue and one audio head unit issue the whole time I owned it.

I'd say 05+ my Daytona was a beast after I fixed the lack of maintenance that wasn't done. 145k on the clock. I have an 07 3500 now and I'm still extremely pleased.
