Hi All,

So, i made it to my in-laws in Denver few days ago - 1500 mile trip. And all went well, truck drove smooth and no sounds.

The past 2 days, when i start the truck in the morning, i'm getting a very loud whining noise. It seems that it's originating from the serpentine belt. Not sure what exactly is causing the noise...

Here's the Youtube link:
The temperature in the morning is about 20 degrees F, and the noise goes away after maybe 30 seconds or so. It has happened 3 times already, and it never happened in the past.

What could it be? Should i be worried about it? Will Powertrain warranty cover it?

Thank you all in advance!

The only belt driven accessory that might be covered by powertrain would be the water pump. I believe that's the same noise a lot of other people have. IIRC, it's the idler pulley.

I wouldn't be worried. When the alternator is cold as well as bearings on pulley's they whine a bit until they warm up, which is pretty quick. My truck does it a bit when I'm up north in the winter and my electric tools do it a bit if I don't heat them up in the cab first.

Thank you, any more feedback about this noise, or the above posts are spot on?

How much power train warranty do you have left?

Your truck sure sounds better then it did.

I still got 30k miles left, and until November of 2018, so that makes me slightly sane...

Yes, it sounds much better now. Although when it warms up, it does start to make more ticks and occasional random knocks from lower end, but looks like other two people on this forum confirmed similar knocks and we want to believe it's OK...

RedLine 5-30 definitely quiets it down, which I do like. Hopefully it also helps to prolong my cam and lifters

So how about that new whining noise I got? Lol

That sounds more like an intake or vacuum “whine” to me but not sure why it is doing it. Just sounds air rated to me. Mine has a whiner pulley and I don’t even know which one. I’ll do a cold start tomorrow and record it and see if I can hear any similarity. It is -19F here so might sound a little worse :(

Damn that's cold! Makes me want to go outside wearing a t-shirt as it's 11*F in Denver now.

I started a thread, about this same thing, 3 yrs ago....see the link below. It is the same exact noise that my 14 Sport made. I now have a 16 Rebel and that made the noise once last year in the cold....this is the 2nd winter with the Rebel and I'll see if it does it again. I also had 17 Big Horn rental last winter for a week and it made the same freaking noise in the very cold. None of trucks made that noise in the spring, summer, or fall seasons...only the very cold winters. I took it to the dealer a few times for them to look at it but of course it couldn't be duplicated so nothing was done. The noise reminds me of a dry bearing in a pulley, or something like that. I know there is a TSB out for the 3.6 V6 Pentastar for that noise....in the videos online the sound is the same one we are getting with the V8 Hemi. I do believe the TSB calls for replacing the idler pulley on the Pentastar. If you get a fix, then please post it back in this thread.

Thank you, I read through your thread regarding this issue. I think that it's not an issue since I'm in California, and never heard this noise until now visiting in Denver.

It seemed like this noise was louder when I moved the mic near the alternator. Maybe pulley..

I'll ignore it for now as looks like many have it as well.

I'm back to California, and the whining noise at startup is gone as I started my truck this morning at 60*F

So no problem I guess...
