I’m very envious right now!!! The wife gave me the go ahead but I’m paying some things off first.

How are you and your buddies trucks doing?

So far ok, haven’t beaten on it since the engine mishap. Still waiting to get a new tune done. Been to cold, we’re still getting snow lol.

I don't think he had a lot of mods other than a tuner and the whipple on a newer truck. Was it supercharger related or during hard acceleration? I have my heart set on one of these and appreciate someone else's experience to help me know what i can expect.

Not sure honestly what was the cause. Happened at wide open after a shift.

We’re thinking it was either a tune issue or possibly a ring gap closed. Don’t think it was detonation.

Either way it has forged rods and pistons now.

So are you running a hotter than standard/recommended tune? What would be the cause of a ring gap closing?

We did change a bit in the tune where it was a little lean.

A ring gap will close from to high of cylinder pressure from things like boost. When a ring gap closes and touches it basically stops the piston in the bore and will usually rip the top of the piston off, it’s very messy.

Like I said though we’re not really sure what happened. We’re not doing a dyno tune this time, we’re going to tune it on the road driving it.

Should be bullet proof now with the forged parts, and lower compression ratio to keep pressure/temps down. I could up the boost now easily but I’ll likely leave it alone for a bit.

I see. I was hoping it would be bullet proof enough to work with stock internals because my truck shouldn't need the motor rebuilt as stock for about 30 years at a 6000 mile per year average. I don't want to add a super charger and grenade it within 1 year. Could it be detuned to have less pressure and sacrifice some power for dependability? I want something that is drive anywhere any distance dependable and still fun around town.

For a comparison my buddies truck which was identical hasn’t had any issues.

There’s really no way to make it 100% bullet proof unless you build up the motor as well. You have to keep in mind your adding roughly an extra 200hp to the engine, that wasn’t necessarily designed for it. The hemi is a pretty tough motor and I’m honestly the first person I’ve come across with a whipple that blew up an engine.

The whipple kit is designed to be safe on the hemi and be within the powertrains limit but there’s always that chance something could happen.

Getting a safe tune is the biggest insurance to make sure your engine won’t grenade, don’t trust the whipple tune, at least get someone qualified in late model supercharged vehicles to look at it.

Yes you could run a bigger pulley and take the boost from 6-8psi down to 4-5, but 6-8 is within the limit for the hemi.

Honestly you should be at least mentally prepared that something could fail.

Whipple does offer a engine warranty for a cost and it will cover up to $5,000 in repairs.

I wonder if anyone has any dyno numbers with this setup running 4-5 pounds of boost? I am a ok with losing some power to be extra safe. Does anyone know what that 3 year 36,000 mile warranty costs? I am aware with power adders chit happens but knowing the odds I'm working with helps.
