I’m in New Jersey. Just wondering if anyone knows when they typically change from summer to winter blend gasoline. Just did tires on my truck and took a larger than expected mpg hit.

According to an article I just read, the switch takes place in most areas around Sept. 15th.

Thanks. I think that may be the culprit here. Just got tires on a few days ago and filled up that day too. I think it’s coincidental. I only went with 305/55/20’s AT’s

Last year I lost about 4 mpg when they made the switch. This year I'm driving a new diesel so it wont effect me but my wife's subby will lose about 3-4 mpg. I'll have to start checking to see if they have switched it around here.

I noticed about a 3-3.5mpg gain when it switched to summer this spring. I think it’s the fuel and not so much the new tires that did it this time.

Yup. I noticed with my last fill-up, MPG has dropped by about 1. That was back at the end of September.

I notice only 1-2 MPG hit with the fuel change. I'll notice another 1-2 MPG hit on top of that (3-4 MPG total) if I start having to use my 4WD because of snow.

I'm in NY and I actually called the state last year to find out when they switched. The gentleman I spoke to told me that they start in Oct, but it's a staged switch. A little bit in Oct, another change in October, then Nov and the final one in Dec.

Unfortunately diesels get a kick in the nuts too with winter blended/winterized diesel fuel. Using the winter front and the block heater on the EcoDiesel helps get the truck up to temp faster minimizing the economy loss. Depending on the type of driving (long vs short trips), I've seen a 1-2 mpg hit in the winter.

Yeah winter diesel fuel sucks and I took a bigger hit on it then my gas motor did. :(

Thanks, I didnt realize that Diesel took a hit too. It makes sense that they screw all of us...lol. I'll remember your advice on warmup./

In the cold states, the winter blend is to help the fuel vaporize easier so it will burn.

This is the reason that older carb cars used to vapor lock on a hot day in the middle of winter.

Been there done that.

Diesel is blended with anti gel additives... this will reduce the BTU content of the fuel. Basically means less power per stroke. Winter diesel (at least in Canada) is more expensive than summer diesel negating the savings in price of regular gas. Better fuel economy overall though for diesel.

Not sure of the technical specs of why gasoline is worse. Could he the same reasoning.
