I have to agree with another poster that the 4.7 was an exceptionally smooth, quiet, and reliable engine. I've seen them with a lot more that 200K miles and still never been touched. About the only thing I've ever heard were the timing chain guides wearing out.

The 4.7s were mated to the 545RFE in those years, which was also a solid transmission (if properly maintained).

Around here $4000 trucks have bodies like swizz cheese, but I see the OP is in California where that should not be an issue.

Best regards,
Dusty

Go in there with 3500 if they take that you got no downside IMO even if it only lasts a yr or 2 I wouldn't buy it and start throwing munny at it just drive it as long as it's running. 3500-4000 for a 13 is a no brainer if in running order go price a similiar truck with 100-130K at a dealer you'd be looking at 10 Grand MORE!

When buying used , , condition is the most important criteria , all else being ok. Mileage and age are small potatoes. Owned 39 vehicles. 19 used , NEVER failed me. 20 new , 2 failed me. BTW . Absolutely in love with my 2015 Laramie ecodiesel. Yes , all the recalls done. LOL.

Four grand into a used Corolla would be a better investment in an everyday beater to drive.

Yeah, no. My sister had bought a used Corolla. Worst car she ever had. Toyota's reputation from 30 years ago is no longer valid. I'd rather have the RAM anyday. Much easier to work on.

Sounds like you are already convinced to buy it and you’re looking for reassurance. Kind of like a fantasy football trade. Just go for it! Probably the best 4K spent on a vehicle possible.

I’d vote yes- but try to get them down to 3600 or so. Or spend $4k on a Honda Accord. I bought one for my daughter when she was a HS junior for $3800 and it lasted through high school and four years of college.

Trucks that pile up a large number of miles in a short time are the ones that are most likely make it to an even higher number. Let's say there is a 7 year old truck with 50,000 miles on it, and another with 150,000 miles on it. Lots of folks would gravitate towards the one with 50, and then be surprised when it has a bunch of problems within the next 50,000. Someone else might take the 150k mile one and drive it all over and easily double it to 300k with hardly a hiccup.

Mileage is a factor, but not the only factor. Things rust out before they wear out.

Remember right tool for the right Job. Do you need a truck for groceries? Running costs and tires much higher than a cheap commuter and for 4000 there are plenty of camrys around you would get 80k more out of With min repair costs

In 2011 I bought a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant with 175k miles on it for 3500 cash and that was a great deal for my budget. In no way shape or form would I pass on this truck. Where can you find a deal like that?

I would say if you have a good feeling about it go for it but if you yourself have negative thoughts don't buy it , I have driven older rams with well over 300,000 that was not properly taken care of and love the dodge trucks they are the best bet in the area I live in and I just bought a 2003 and bought a new 5.7 engine for it and I think this will be my last truck I buy as I am 61 I believe it will outlast me and go to my daughter after I am gone .

Starting to think the OP wanted around, just a little bit too long,
maybe asked a cop-worker about the deal and price,
then the Co-worker was slightly more decisive and snatched it up.

Wouldn't be the first time.....

I'm still here. I wasn't getting any notifications via email of replies to this thread. For some reason they just stopped.

For those curious, I'm waiting on the VP of the company to come into this branch so I can try to chip off some more money. Worth a shot anyways. if not I'll just buy it for the 4000. Shpuld be this week. The trucks definitely not going anywhere. I take care of the yard here and the truck sits outside of my office as it has for the past 4 months.
