You have the same filter I think as the 5.7, part number 10-48 if you wanted to try Royal Purple filters. Same thing, good flow, heavy can, synthetic media.

My first inclination was to run Amsoil Ea, then I saw your post about the RP a while ago and was checking them out. I was hunting for the Pennzoil Ultra and stumbled across the SRT filter, so I thought I'd check it out. I like the fact that it is still basically an OEM part.

More quality options the better, thanks for pointing out.

Had my truck at the dealer today and I decided to see what my truck was worth and ran some numbers on a 2015 BigHorn. I test drove it and sure enough when the oil hit 200+ degrees it was ticking up a storm. It had 8 miles on it. It was about as loud as my truck is on PYB.

Holy cow, lot of reading. And Well worth the time.
My truck is about to hit 1500 miles. If I got this correct. Let the dealer do the free oil change which is probably PYB. Then around 3k go to the full synthetic? I am going to run Amsoil SS or redline not sure which yet. After reading about the RP filter possibly leaking I'll probably go Amsoil EA filter.
I was hoping for an update on the cerma but to be honest it sounds like if I use Amsoil ss or Redline I will be using top quality oil and the wear should be minimal.
Any suggestions?
And thank you to everyone who has put in the time and effort to build this thread. very useful information.

My new one is very quiet and I will keep using PYB to keep it that way.

A question I had though was how much more oil do I need to put in if I use the older, large filters? It can't be much more, possibly 1/2 a quart?

The factory fill is very high on the dipstick, I will scribe it when I do an oil change but would like to use the larger filter. I added some Redline engine break in fluid so my levels were a little high and I drained some out.

So I switched my truck to Redline yesterday. Only put about 15 miles on it but I can definitely see a difference.

The main thing I noticed is the engine seems to run smoother in general. Not that it ran rough before or anything but there is a difference. When the truck is in MDS, it goes into and comes out of it much smoother than before. I had to turn my music down just to make sure it was actually in MDS. The thing that really surprised me is my oil pressure at idle when the oil is 200+ degrees. It used to hover around 29psi and dip to 27 when stopped and in drive. With Redline its around 33psi in drive stopped. Really wasn't expecting that as Platinum and PYB both were below 30psi at idle.

Now for the only possibly negative thing I encountered. At one point I started it up after the oil cooled down to about 90 degrees and I heard a slight tapping like I did on cold starts with Platinum. However I started it up completely cold this morning and it was perfectly quiet so I'm not sure what that was about.

My tick at 200+ degrees is about the same as with PYB so I'm going to give that a good 500-1000 miles and see how its doing then.

Overall I'm very impressed with Redline and will update in 500 miles or so.

Yeah, wait and see when you are at 500 miles plus. What filter did you use?

I really can't think of any time that I've changed oil and not noticed at least equal or lesser noise,,, New oil never sounds like old oil,,,

Did some experimenting back when I had an air-cooled v-twin. They all run HOT here in TX,,, Close to 300 degree oil temps at times,,, By design, an exposed air cooled engine is very easy to hear any type of tick/clank/clunk, etc,,

In certain engines, use of a Semi-syn actually resulted in less engine noise than a full syn. (This bike also had a shared sump, so shear was an additional factor, unlike our RAMS).

Oddly enough, after seeing what those MC's went through, the paltry ~210~ or so degrees our oil runs at seems like chickenfeed,,, And with virtually no shear it's certainly not something deemed as a 'severe appliction',,,

At any rate, if ya find something you like that works for ya,,,, use it! =)

My tick went away around 300 miles or so with the redline. I noticed the smoothness in he truck too but it really made a difference in my snowmobile and ATV.

Was using Mobile 1 Full Syn but that might change. Over a quart low at 3800 miles.

Sorry to duplicate earlier post but no reply.

Filter such as M1-210 or RP 20-820

I would say no more than a half quart. Probably less...

What is everyone's opinion on blending conv and synthetic? I don't feel it is cost effective to buy a gallon of PYB and two lone quarts. And if I buy 2 gallons I have a few quarts left sitting in my very hot garage for a year with my OCI. I am considering adding 2 quarts of Redline to the 5 quarts of PYB for my oil changes after I do my first change with all PYB. I want to avoid the tick but get some advantage of synthetic. I only drive about 6k miles per year so full synthetic is not really cost effective.

I have a lifetime warranty so I am not terribly concerned with engine life although if the amount of the repair exceeds the value of the vehicle, say in 20 years, they will total the truck and pay me that amount, essentially.

What's the difference of it in a hot car. You think it stored in a cool truck or warehouse when it's being made? lol

I've been meaning to post this.

Nothing to do with my Ram, but rather my GTP.

I've been using dino quaker state in this car since I've had it. Over 16-17 years now. Never felt the hype about synthetic being SOO great. It's easy to change the oil on this car and I do it often so never felt the need to switch.

So, this is my weekend car, barley gets driven once a week.. I have noticed recently on a cold start after sitting a week. The valve train will clack for just a few seconds until the oil gets flowing. It kinda bothered me because that doesn't sound good and could cause some premature wear.

After reading this thread about moly and Pennzoil yellow bottle. I decided to switch to it. Well started up this weekend after it's been sitting two weeks. Been fixing the A/C and other stuff.
Fired it up. No clacking or noises from the valve train. NOTHING!!! Was kinda shocked..

So i'm a believer. hahaha
