The hardest time I had was finding a lift kit for 2wd models. At one point I was trying to part one together, but without a machine shop to fabricate anything it was a huge headache. I ended up buying the only one I ever found.. Rough Country 6"
Lately I've been tossing around the idea of doing a 6.1 conversion.. more ot less an excuse to tear stuff apart and get my hands dirty. I never realized how ugly the 5.7's actually are until I removed the TB resonator and air filter housing. As far as dressing up the engine bay, there doesn't seem to be a lot. Anodized aluminum fuel rails, some aftermarket pulleys and hose covers perhaps.
I decided to join a forum to see what actual Ram owners have done.. likes and dislikes. Aftermarket sellers will always tell you everything is amazing.
I just like to upgrade. I'm probably the same as any other Ram owner.. wanting my truck to look, run and sound better than anyone else's. Built not bought, you know? It's all about customizing. I've been obsessed with Rams since I was 15. I went straight from my first car, a 77 Cutlass Supreme, to a soccer mom SUV doing the family thing. Finally at 34, I bought my first Ram and took home the exact year and model I drooled over while buying the stupid suv. Anyhow..
I think you're right about the TB.. especially with them being electronic. For the price point, I've seen quite a few performance camshafts around 500 bucks that'd gain 50+ HP and some that even claim to run with stock. Any decent headers are going to run at least that much for minimal gain.
What I'm after.. I guess my first priority would be to boost torque, then obviously horsepower. I could really care less about gas mileage. If it was that important I'd have just bought a v6. Technically, it's a work truck.. I haul a lot in the bed and pull trailers frequently.. almost daily, but to me it's work/luxury/sport/casual. One minute I'm at home depot loading wood. The next, I may be running a Ford light to light with 2x4's hanging out of the bed. As far as luxury goes.. I don't know how much more luxurious it can get than having seat warmers in the dead of winter with a DVD player and 7 channel infinity sound (9 counting the two 12" Kappas under the back seat). People that refer to their work truck as "just a work truck.." are simply justifying as a reason to be lazy and rag it out. From a client perspective.. it speaks a lot about a contractor the condition they keep their truck.
The constant tinkering and excessive preventive maintenance/upkeep is probably the only reason it's still running after looking back at everything I've done to it. I'm pushing almost 250k miles and you can literally lick the engine.. it's spotless. Never a drip of anything.. and I keep it clean so that issues are easy to spot.
I had a "friend of a friend" replace the entire rear end in his shop right after I bought it.. and that was the only time a shop had ever touched it. Right around 75k miles.. so I've put on close to 175k miles and she drives like new.
Way too much money invested to ever let it go.. so anything it needs it gets. A gasket, vaccuum hose, new motor.. whatever. Like having a wife again, but better.
I get paranoid because a part can't just go bad. It always wants to cause this big chain reaction of wear to several other parts. "Slight" wear to other parts or assemblies, as a result, that wouldn't wear enough to justify replacing.. would just absolutely drive me nuts until it did get replaced.
Unfortunately, like most others, I am not rich or my Ram would be an SRT 10. I'll try and get some pics tomorrow to upload. She really doesn't look like a 14 year old truck.
You can cleanup the engine bay pretty well, I still have some more I want to do like an e-fan and a battery relocation
