Horizontal filters make more mess because the oil comes out of the filter as well .
When I was a kid I worked at an oil & tire change shop and I hated the horizontal filters .

Having wrenched for years I have the opposite opinion. I'd rather crack the filter and let all the oil just drain out than crack the filter and have oil stream down the sides of the filter, while trying to not drop and spill a slippery filter full of hot oil.

That's why I let a local reputable mechanic do my oil changes for me. I bring him the oil and filter, he charges me $15 for labor. For that kind of deal I'm not crawling up under the truck, banging my knuckles and burning myself with hot oil.

To each their own I guess , I've been wrenching for over 30 yrs and I've never liked the HZ filters .
I'd say I depends on the situation , such as if your on a lift , on the ground , and what's under the the filter . If the filter is mounted to where the oil can run out into a container without making a mess on other components I guess it doesn't really matter .

Just a word of caution, in the for what it's worth department. I installed the perma-cool kit about a year ago on my 2017. One morning after starting the truck, the oil pressure went to ZERO and I quickly shut it down. One of the hoses clamped to the engine adaptor had blown right off of the barbed fitting. I had checked and retightened each of the worm screw clamps at each oil change too. After that little episode, that luckily happened on my driveway, and not underway, I removed the relocation kit, and went back to the standard filter location. I refuse to always be concerned about the security of the hose ends on the relocation set up.

IMO, unless you use special constant tension hose clamps on the rubber hose and barbed fittings, there always will be the risk of a similar event happening, and maybe even if using those. That and as someone mentioned the rubber hose only has a limited lifespan.

The best way to do this as a "fire and forget" would be to use a high quality braided SS hose and fittings that you build to the hose on one end, and have male NPT ends that swivel on the other end. Going that route would give you hose ends that screw into the female NPT openings on both filter relocation adaptors, and because they are built to the ends of the hose itself, absolutely will not come loose, period. High quality braided SS hose also doesn't have a limited life span either to my knowledge. Only downside of this approach is cost. Top quality braided SS hose in AN10 isn't cheap, nor are the fittings I described. Probably looking at ~$150 for the parts thru Summit or other outlet. The fittings alone are around $30 each.

Any farm supply outlet can build you hydraulic hoses that'll take 2,000+ psi and last for years, for probably a lot less money then braided stainless hoses. I'm guessing you used the fittings and hoses that came with the kit, they aren't the best quality.Upgrade them to pushloc style fittings in -10 (5/8") and you shouldn't have any problems if you use a good quality hose and clamp.

Advance auto parts can also make you're hoses, check in advance to make sure someone is there that can make them as not everyone is qualified.

On these relo kits, can you not mount the filter horizontally? Seems like that would make more sense, and less mess when taking the filter off. I'm not a fan of vertical filters, unless it's a cartridge style removed from the top.
With the kit you can mount it which ever way you want.

I think the remote filter is cool , but I've never had an issue with the filter location on my 14Ram 5.7L.
I just use a 1qt plastic container( paint Dept at Lowe's) to catch the oil and I've never spilled a drop.

I drive up on ramps and approach from the front , lay a couple rags down break the filter loose by hand then put the container in place , loosen the filter a bit so it drains in the cup then spin it off and let it fall in the cup and finish draining .

Hope this helps !1df192115200652386289cce34934540.jpg1e69806bb6475b8eb3aa6c2a98d13a6f.jpg6d4dc49b8f4ddfaf72ef0a2aef6a0be0.jpg

Damit, now I wish I had saved the bottom end of my redline funnel. Will have to do that the next oil change.

I tried the bag but couldnt get the bag back out without dumping some (most) of the oil.

Next time I will try the paint container instead.

Use a ziploc. :) Seriously - that is what I do.

Get a trans dapt relocation kit and never make another mess ever. Plus taking the filter off in general will just be easier especially if it’s tight.

I like the idea of relocating it but have MaxCare Lifetime so I dont want to give them a reason to deny it.

Also not a fan of the potential for all the oil coming out because of the hoses (granted I could get better hoses made but still).

Sounds good, keep in mind they have to prove that the modification caused the issue. So unless oil leaks out of the hose due to improper installation and your engine blows then you should be ok.

I did upgrade my hoses to some Russell stainless steel braided hose along with Russell push lock fittings. Not only does it look good but it’s been pretty reliable for the past month and a half and I’ve been checking for leaks and there is not 1 drop coming out.

From my understanding, the MaxCare plans do NOT work like mag-moss. Mag-moss applies to warranties, and technically MaxCare is NOT a warranty, or some fine print like that.

Some of it is for my own piece of mind, someone just posted a story where they lost all oil pressure because the hose leaked. I changed the oil in my truck once so far and its not the best location but it isnt impossible either. Ive done worse (late 90's Mercury Sable had the oil filter horizontal right above an HVAC hard line....getting it in and out was a HUGE pita because of that stupid hard line).

Keep in mind that they don't have to prove **** unless you spend your own money and take them to court over it. When you are talking about the lubrication system of the engine being modified they, meaning the dealer and FCA, can most certainly deny warranty claims on engine internals if you've modified it in any way. And I bet they have more money, lawyers, engineers and technical experts that can show up in court to tell you to pound sand.

Personally, I'm not messing with anything to do with engine internals for the duration of my factory warranty so long as posts keep popping up about dead lifters and wrecked cams.

Very true...... it all depends on your dealer most of them are a bunch of a$$ hats and will tell you to take a walk. Luckily even when I had my fully deleted dually they still did warranty work on mine so I’m not worried about a relocation kit on my 1500.

Chief and Ric, you both bring up good points...even though I have MaxCare, too, I think I'll still add the relo kit at my '16 Reb's next OIC. I can use a bigger filter and get to it easier; those are two big pluses in my book.

Trans Dapt 1127 fits the trucks, but most guys upgrade the fittings and hoses to -10 (5/8") from the -8 (1/2's ) fittings that come with the kit.

https://www.jegs.com/i/Trans-Dapt/969/1127/10002/-1

I see references about upgrading the hose size all over, but I have yet to find a reason why.

I ordered my kit yesterday and hope to get it in next week before vacation. I'll probably go with the hose barbs - at least for now.
