3rd gens 04-05 HEMIs only, all motor none of the MDS V8 switching to 4cyclinder ********. You can even make it look like a 06-08 with a few items.

3rd gen was my dream truck when I was in 12th grade in 2002 when it came out. We called them FBOTS (full body ****** trucks) Now I own one, in black like I wanted, but better since it has the hemi and not that 4.7/5.9 motor.

Actually I wouldn't have regret about getting any Ram. Cripes, it ain't a Chevy. I saw a gen 3 just this morning that looked absolutely pristine. Completely clean all the way to the fender wells, paint gleaming. If I didn't know there was a newer generation I'd have believed it was brand new. They look great to me.

I gotta tell ya......those 12 years must seem like yesterday, the way it reads.....

A couple things make them (03) unique mostly dealing with tuning issues. No transmission tuning. No SCT support for the 03 hemi model. Diablo (DSP) has issues with corrupting the PCM and does not adjust rpm or speed limiters leaving basically SuperChip 3815 as the choice for adjusting the rpm/speed limiters. Unfortunately SC does not support custom tuning. On the other hand there is the TMR mod which works well IMO. The 03 responds well to Line Pressure boosters, stage III VB, high stall converters and gears. Also unique to 03/04 is the "High Idle Mod" which rises the idle to 630-650 rpm allowing cams be run in the Spartan range. They are easy to modify and use most of the same parts as the newer models. There are a few who have custom CMR tuning, but IMO are running in uncertain territory. There are some other alternatives such as PSC1 and similar MAP modifiers. Valve springs have been a problem on a few 03/04 trucks but springs are normally changed when doing cam upgrades. Nothing IMO wrong with 03's... Good luck.

Regret with my 07 4x4 1500 is the stupid bushing front end design.

I take that back. If it was a solid bushing it would be fine, but the metal collar ***** everything up.

Truckless...
The only thing I regret about my 07 is the interior... I miss the black cloth out of my old 05, and I would love a 4th gen interior in my current truck.

My 07 is starting to show her age too... I try to keep up with it, but there's always something.

5.7L HEMI
I purchased my 07 Dodge Ram Big Horn 1500 Quad Cab 5.7L HEMI 4X2 truck last December. I paid $15 grand for it and it had around 58K on the odometer. This truck looks brand new and has been very well taken care of by the previous owner. I love this truck and the power/performance of it's 5.7L HEMI motor. I have no regrets with this truck and plan to keep it a long time.

I am a member on three different forums and from what I have read, the owners who have a lot of problems do so because of how they were modified. Some used a tuner and force a particular tune, which caused a loss in communication within the PCM, or other electronics going out. Many can not get the truck to start or stay running because of the changes they made.

I thought about buying a 2010 - 2012, but I didn't want to deal with the payments that come with a $35K to $55K price tag for a good low mileage truck. I sure wasn't going to buy a 2014 and have a $600.00 to $800.00 dollar note every month.:waytogo:

Your observations are mostly correct in as a poorly executed modification can lead to unexpected failures of one sort or another. However there are also failures that can occur that have nothing to do with modifications the owner or even maintenance but more with time and design. Some being the early valve springs, electrical connector corrosion or the open bottom of the IPM, What I can say is the folks who have modified their much beloved trucks are much better equipped to make necessary repairs than those who have not. Anyway that's my 2 cents..
