I don't understand the hate for mds. I like it. Changes the sound a bit, but doesn't change the feel and there is no increase in vibration, plus I get 18ish on the highway with it. 2018 2500 4x4
Right... because you have an updated flash and although the engine design is the same, they still changed improvements of individual parts associated with, let's say, the engine mounts.

Which cause vibration.

Which make people hate MDS.

Find a 2015 6.4 with MDS and drive it. It's pretty terrible. Wasnt until 2016 that they updated the transitions for MDS. 2017 they still built everything the same as '16, but they updated software. Late 2017, they released a TSB for MDS transitions so now you don't even feel it operating or not operating.

2018. Updated. Refined. Improved.

My 17 it's definitely noticeable. It almost sounds like a gear change...lol.

I can hear and feel it and there is noticeable vibration. Not horrible or anything I worry about but it's there. I see it has soon as the eco light comes on so I know it' the mds.

Solid facts on the MDS feature is needed. Manual could be more helpful. Dealers have different answers/directions. In our horse/camp group of 30, there are about 14 2014-2018 2500 Rams with 6.4 or Diesel and 6 speed trans. After listening to the "rig talk" at the last trip meeting, it is clear that there is confusion. Your feed back would be helpful.
My understanding is:
1. When driving around town under 45MPH use the trans stalk to set the trans at 5. MDS will not activate and the trans will not lug or hard shift. With 4000k miles we have found this to be true.
2. When highway speed is 50-70 set trans in 6th gear. MDS will activate, but at that speed MDS will not be a noticeable irritation.
3. When towing, leave the trans stalk in 6th, press the tow button on the dash. When tow button is on MDS is not active.

I drive in Manual mode in 6th. I have never had MDS activate while in 6th. Only works when in Drive.

Thanks gents. I missed the obvious. Now understand that MDS is "disabled" by selecting the top gear you want or simply pressing tow button. Question. For around town Ca traffic driving, under 40 MPH. I set the trans at 5th gear which keeps it from going into 6th OD. Seems smother and more responsive.

When I run it in 6th in manual mode it's unreal how much better the throttle response is around town without the mds! I'd love to have it tuned out

I drive 20 miles round trip to work and i average 19mpg. I love the mds. I'm also a ******* nerd, so stupid **** like that makes me happy. Automatic rear spoilers? Air suspensions? Start stop? Yup. I find all that goofy stuff amazing.

MDS has the potential to ruin your cam and lifters when the oil solenoids go out. At some point I'll be in the market for a delete kit. A software patch would be good for now.

Has this happened to people?

The soft spot in a hemi is the cam/lifters. Some say it's bad parts, bad choice of oil, lack of maintenance, MDS lifters, and probably other things too. I don't know that there is a diffenity answer as there are many high mileage Hemi's with no issues at all and it's not only the MDS lifters that are wipeing the cams.

Yes. It's not very common but it happens. MDS works by cutting oil pressure to the lifters and if something goes wrong the MDS system is connected to the valvetrain.

Cuts oil pressure to the lifters? Is there a resource that explains the design and function? I understood that MDS cut spark and fuel to 4 cylinders when active.

It does that too.
