my 16' Ram has just started to make this really loud whining sound when driving and while at idle, it is not the A/c as it makes no diffrence if its on or off. The truck has 36k. what could this be? I have to take it in because my cruise control doesn't work right so id like to do some troubleshooting of my own. Any help would be appreciated.

Check your serpentine pulleys and tension pulley. Easy to do. Move your belt out of the way. Hand spin/turn the wheels. If they do not move very smooth or make a grating noise, you found your problem. An old mechanic trick. While it is running carefully spray WD 40 on the bolt/bearing part of the pulley. If it quiets you found it.

I would check the alternator and water pump along with the pulleys.

Could be an exhaust related issue also.

Check fluid levels in all areas.

Fixed the problem, the breather hose was loose and was making noise against the airbox, i reconnected the hose and the noise went away..
it seems like someone knocked it loose when i had it in the dealer for an oil change.
