2 Cents worth
I recently had a 2011 Ram 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi. Great truck. It towed well under 5000lbs, above that gas mileage sucks 7-9 MPG and going up 6-7% grades got me too many middle fingers.
Just purchased a 2016 Ram 2500 6.7 Diesel with all the goodies (Laramie edition). We tow a toy hauler dry 5200lbs loaded about 7200lbs like a dream.
A recent 200 mile trip back which was from Mesa,AZ to Pinetop,AZ going from 1800 feet to 7000 feet in elevation. This tank pulled effortlessly up hills and got 12.5 MPG.
So depending on your usage should determine what your needs are. When it comes to towing above 5000lbs the Diesels win hands down. It's all about the torque!
