I was in the same boat. Wanted to customize it because it's something I genuinely enjoy doing but didn't want to do the same cookie cutter crap everyone else does. Went through a few different setups so far, I've decided on the look I want and am slowly getting it there. Won't be to everyone's taste but it's my truck, it only needs to please me.
Stock sport grille
Plasti-Derped it black..was happy with this but again, too easy, everyone does it.
Started brainstorming and wanted to try accenting with red..tried PlastiDip again and liked what I was onto but wasn't satisfied with the finish color. Too flat and kinda pink.
Started scouring the interwebs for other options and came across a picture of a 2500 Power Wagon that had exactly what I tried to do. I got an instant hard on.
Contacted my local dealership to inquire how to get a set of those red inserts. No dice. That slight difference in the grille frame makes the bottom set of inserts all the same length instead of the very bottom one being shorter like the very top. You would need 2 sets of the short top inserts to do a straight up swap. I put out craigslist and facebook posts looking to buy or trade with someone and finally got a hit. This gentleman requested me to make them black again and he would straight up trade. Yes please! So I then had all but two, I left them all off for a while, wanted all or nothing lol. I then contacted the dealer again and they were helpful in getting me just those two shorter upper inserts that I needed. They took them right off a truck in their lot. It was awesome service but I paid an embarrassing price for it! I then took those two pieces to a paint shop and they matched it very nicely. Don't have a side by side pic unfortunately but here is the most recent pic and you can see the difference in the finish. I like it.
I just recently added custom badges

That's where I'm at now. I also want to do something with that lower fascia piece but can't decide. It has those two long fins that are an exact match to the grille inserts and I've been thinking about trying to paint them red and see how I like it. Haven't tried yet as I'm worried it may start to be too much or I won't be able to match the colors properly. Don't think I want to spend money on that getting it painted. We'll see.
Hope this is helpful. As you said, it may not be your taste, I know for damn sure there will be people that hate it. Please keep any negativity to yourself guys, we're a like minded community of enthusiasts/hobbyists here!
