Do the math,,,
EcoD 'HFE' (actually higher MPG than the Limited) 21/29 mpg Hwy
Penta 18/25 mpg Highway
600 miles in the Eco-D = 28.6/20.7 gallons
600 miles in the Penta = 33.4/24 gallons
4.8/3.2 Gallon split per week

The Eco D is $4,270.00 more than the Penta.

Gas is 2.09 here at the Local Sams club. I'm sure some folks will whine on that as being 'unfair', so lets round it up to $2.50/Gal. Even if gas and diesel cost the exact same a gallon, (said no one ever) you're looking at $12.00/$8.00 a week savings in fuel over a Penta.

Now all we need to do is figure out how many weeks it would take at $8-$12 a week to get back the extra $4,270.00 you spent on the EcoD over a Penta.

Hmm, looks like you'll need 7 - 10 years 218,400 / 312,000 miles to recoup the extra cost of an Eco D over a Pentastar in fuel savings....

Do you plan on keeping it that long, just to break even?

I wonder how much I'd save with the pentastar vs the hemi( my hemi is a 2011)?If it's not that big of a difference I should just go for it. If I got the sport model then that would solve my body paint problem!

Now your back to the beginning if you can afford a new truck you can afford the half dozen extra gallons of gas a week to get the hemi you really want , I know I wouldn't be happy going from a hemi to a pentastar or the Eco d

Here's my quick estimate for Hemi vs EcoD break down

(Quoted and changed) Do the math,,,
EcoD 'HFE' (actually higher MPG than the Limited) 21/29 mpg Hwy
Hemi 15/22 mpg Highway
600 miles in the Eco-D = 28.6/20.7 gallons
600 miles in the Hemi = 40/27.7
11.4/7 gallons

The Eco D is $4,270.00(-1650)=$2620 more than the Hemi.

Gas is 2.09 here at the Local Sams club. I'm sure some folks will whine on that as being 'unfair', so lets round it up to $2.50/Gal. Even if gas and diesel cost the exact same a gallon, (said no one ever) you're looking at $28.50/$17.50.00 a week savings in fuel over a Hemi.

Now all we need to do is figure out how many weeks it would take at $17.50 - 28.50 a week to get back the extra $2620.00 you spent on the EcoD over a Hemi.

Hmm, looks like you'll need 2-3 years 149 weeks (hwy) / 91 weeks (city) to recoup the extra cost of an Eco D over a Hemi in fuel savings....

again for penta to hemi comparison, this was fun!

Penta 18/25 mpg Highway
Hemi 15/22 mpg Highway
600 miles in the Hemi = 40/27.7 gallons
600 miles in the Penta = 33.4/24 gallons
6.4/3.7 Gallon split per week

The Hemi is $1650.00 more than the Penta.

Gas is 2.09 here at the Local Sams club. I'm sure some folks will whine on that as being 'unfair', so lets round it up to $2.50/Gal. Even if gas and diesel cost the exact same a gallon, (said no one ever) you're looking at $16.00/$9.25 a week savings in fuel over a Penta.

Now all we need to do is figure out how many weeks it would take at $9.25-16 a week to get back the extra $1650.00 you spent on the Hemi over a Penta.

Hmm, looks like you'll need 2-3 years 178 weeks(hwy) / 103 weeks (city) miles to recoup the extra cost of an Eco D over a Pentastar in fuel savings....

I know it's only anecdotal evidence but I've been hearing a lot of maintenance problems with the Eco d , might want to look into that more

If you kept your truck 100,000 miles before trading and kept up at 600miles/wk, that would be 166 weeks and we can show the total cost of fuel versus the premium for each engine.

hwy
Pentastar - (100,000/25)*$2.50 = $10,000 lifetime fuel cost
Hemi - (100,000/22)*$2.50 = $11,363.63 fuel + $1650 engine upgrade = $13,113.63
Eco D - (100,000/29)*2.50 = $8620.69 fuel + $4270 engine upgrade = $12,890.69

city

Pentastar - (100,000/18)*$2.50 = $13,888.89 lifetime fuel cost
Hemi - (100,000/15)*$2.50 = $16666.67 fuel + $1650 engine upgrade = $18,316.67
Eco D - (100,000/21)*2.50 = $11904.76 fuel + $4270 engine upgrade = $16.174.76

Look at that difference in City numbers! Here's some ammo for those v6'ers out there, haha.

Sport only comes with the Hemi.

So after the fuel costs and the cost of engine upgrades, the city total cost for the ED is $16,174( that's at $2.50 a gallon)

The hemi fuel costs and the cost of engine upgrades, the city total cost is $ 18,316.67 (also $2.50 a gallon)

So it's only $2,141.91 more expensive to drive the hemi in a 100,000 mile snap shot, which also means if you keep the truck less than 100,000 miles it will be much less of a saving to drive the ED.

That calculation is also saying both gas and D is the same price per gallon.

My conclusion is get the hemi... I can live with spending an extra 2k in gas for the entire life cycle of owning the truck.

Are my points right?

Yeah from a fuel perspective that's how I see it. A 2k premium for driving the Hemi over 100,000 miles. Not too bad.

You might also consider resale value , I would think the hemi would hold value better

I appreciate your help. I just checked gas prices for the heck of it all around my house in metro Detroit.

$ mid grade gas $3.19

$diesel $2.69!!!!

I'm assuming with the hemi we have to use mid grade like my jeep hemi?

Yea and if I only drive to 50k miles only $1k premium!

But in our example both fuel types were the same cost. Today diesel is cheaper! Haha always has to be some sort of conflict!

Hey ghost man? Does your jeep have the 8 speed?

If not, the Hemi/8 speed combo is pretty economical on the highway and as mentioned 5000 times here, the EcoD's break even point is gonna require a very long ownership.

If the Hemi is an option, Sport is back on the options list.

Yeaaah baby!

Sorry.

P.S - 89 is recommended, not needed. Never used 89 in my Ram, ran great.

No my jeep has the 6 speed.

Yea that's why I'm grateful for all the feedback. I had such tunnel vision on the ED. I didn't realize the difference in savings from the ED was minimal and only at a longtime of ownership! I typically trade in after 3-4 years.

I know I won't do the v6... And quite honestly the hemi seems almost certain.

Sports black package! Now I hope I can find a 15', not sure I can wait 2 months for a new build!

The cost of DEF is pretty much nothing over the long run. Most people are getting 8 to 10k out of a tank of def that costs $20.
