I know, not another wheel/tire size thread....but I've researched myself into confusion and hoping to get some clarification.

My 1500 4x4 is leveled (with a tad of rake) with Bils set at 2.1....nothing in the rear. I have a Bighorn with stock 20x8 chrome clad wheels. I bought new wheels with -12 offset that are 17x9 (I'm kinda old school). I think my stockers are +19 offset. I also will be installing pocket flares that stick out about 2" and want to make sure the tire size (width) I select sticks out just the right amount....1.5"-1.75" from stock.

I'm looking at either Nitto Terra Grap G2 or Ridge Grap as my new tire. I'm trying to decide on the following sizes. 285/75/r17 (34"), 295/70/r17 (33"), or 305/70/r17 (34").

Here's where I get confused....how far will each tire stick out compared to stock? The +19 to -12 offset should net about a 1.22" difference, so new wheels stick out farther. I want the tires to stick out a total of about 1.5'-1.75" from stock so they are still under the new flares which will stick out about 2" (EGR pocket flares). I don't really like too wide a tire (12.5+) so I'm trying to stay in the range above. I think 34" tall is a large as I'd like to go without a proper lift.

My preference is 285/75, but I'm calculating it will stick out about 1.4" and not sure if it will be quite enough. The 305/70 will stick out about 1.8" I think? This may be too wide a look for me. The 295/70 is between the two, but it's only 33". Am I correct with my calculations? Any issues with rubbing with any of these sizes? If I'm off, please let me know what the correct numbers should be.

Go to rimsntires.com ... They have a comparison program on their site ... Plug in stock size, and plug in your new sizes, and it tells/shows you everything you need to know

I run 17in wheel -16 offset running 11.2in wide tire and I am right at the edge of my fender with tread. It's at least a good reference for you.

this is a 285/75r17 ko2 tire

Thanks Dinky.....great reference shots. I think I may need a wider tire...maybe 305/70.

That or get some bolt on wheels spacers also..

You’ll need a 10” wide -24 offset wheel to be flush with a pocket flare. Remember, lip to lip measurements are actually 11” for example on a 10 wide wheel. Also backspace should be considered a variable when checking inner clearance, but as long as you stay with truck wheel only options it is not a concern with 9”+ widths.

I have 305/70/17 on my stock wheels and it sticks out about 1/2 inch. Hope that helps.

Thanks....with -12 offset wheels this should be about 1.75" out which will be perfect.

Thanks...Tim. Good info. I'm not looking for flush...I'd like the tire to be inside flare about 1/2" or so. Sounds like the 305/70 will be just about right.

Right...forgot about wheel spacers. Really don't want to use unless necessary, but thanks for the reminder.

Nice...thanks. The 34" tire looks good, takes up more space than stock, but doesn't looked stuffed. I appreciate it.

Yeah it looks good I think. I had 35s on 20s before and it definitely looked stuffed. I do believe going from 20s to 17s and from 35s to almost 34s made it look good with minimal change. More side wall makes it deceiving.
