Living in the Dallas area, I will always run the thicker oil that is allowed while under warranty. And after my warranty is up I'll likely go even thicker.

There are virtually Thousands and Thousands of Ram owners out there who honestly think there were a handful of Engineers sitting at a big old Square Table and 2 Suits walk in and Pull out a Quart of 5W-20 from Pepboys plastic sack and place it in the middle of them and Tell Them to Design Us a Engine around This!!!!

But yes 5W 20 is what's on my cap and what I shall run until my motor or ram tells me other wise

I've had many many cars and trucks over the years and have never Had issues with any of them from following the manufactures recommendations . But I have from not following them lol even if they weren't sitting at a table with suits deciding what to recommend just for the heck of it .
With that being said I'm sure 5w30 will not hurt are beloved hemi's nor will 5w20 .

Factor: LoL! 5W-30 as well as 10W-30 has been used in Hundreds of Thousands of Previous Hemis as well as New Generation Hemis with No {Mechanical} issues! Ones that have been Proven or Documented Anyway!

Once AGAIN! There is Nothing Wrong with 5W-20 Or 0W-20 within the Hemi w/MDS!
Some of Us just want to run a 30Wt within these Same Hemi w/MDS!

Without any Actual Documentation or Eye Witness proof of Engine Implosion from using the 30Wt oil... There should be NO Drama! or Preaching/ Mouth Spewage!

Hoping and Praying for Something Catastrophic too happen from using a product that is Not RECOMMENDED...And sitting and waiting to Jump up and down and yell---->I told you so! I told you so! Is not how I roll!

Once again-->Thank You to my parents!

One more thing! For those of you who have Not researched this subject over and over... Within cold weather situations as well as once at operating temp--->We know via the Data! There is Very Little difference in Viscosity {Pump ability} between a 30Wt & 20Wt! He!! after 1k-2K miles most 30Wts shear down to a 20Wt... I {Myself} am more worried about Film Strength! Thus the reason I use the 30Wt... Though the Hemi has proven through Thousands of UOA to be very easy on oil... It might stay in the 30Wt grade much longer...{Which is Good}!

For those of You {Worried} about Us {Who} are not being Followers and going outside the little scary box... Spend less time worrying about Us and Spend more time Proving Us Wrong! If you find out You Can't? Then you basically have NO Leg to Stand on!

If any owner of the 5.7L w/MDS has documented proof of actual physical damage from using a 30Wt Oil within this motor--->Please come forth and Post it... We all need to be aware of it!
I have Always Said-->Talking and Discussing Oil is Very Similar to Discussing Religion... Everyone has their opinions based on Faith... With Very Few acutal Facts...

I do apologize if I am coming off a bit nasty...It just gets So frustrating having others question your decisions and thoughts when they have Never Presented any information what so ever declaring your actions False or Misleading... I do apologize again...

Still, That mind numbing thought of starting the truck in the dead of winter at -5 F Regardless of the oil in it,makes one a bit hesitant....least it does too me.

Rocket: I agree 100%!

PP 5W-30 pure plus has a poor point of -48*C which in my world is -54*F!
My ram will never see that... 0*F is about as low as I will encounter for the most 12 hours...
If I lived way up north where -25*F conditions or colder are prevalent all winter long & my Ram was exposed to the elements 24/7-->No Garage Time... I would not hesitate to run 0W-20 year round... But I don't...

I will repeat myself again! I have never recommended or told any owner to follow me or too go outside the sacred owners manual...

I am only sharing my OWN personal experiences...

Smiley: I agree 100%!

If Pennzoil produced a Pure Plus 0W-30 oil... I would be using it... But the Cost would be much higher...

After looking at Amazons pricing of Pennzoils 0W-20 and 0W-40 oils--->Pricing is ridiculous compared to M1...

Which I don't understand since every other Brand shows the different viscositys at the local WM to be the same price... Local WM just stocks 5W-20 and 5W-30 here in both PP and PUP... Thanks to Pennzoils horrible distribution team...

Pennzoil has been playing catch up for quiet some time... Hence shows the market share!

http://www.amazon.com/Pennzoil-5500...nzoil+platinum+0w-20+full+synthetic+motor+oil

http://www.amazon.com/Pennzoil-5500...nzoil+platinum+0w-20+full+synthetic+motor+oil

$43.05 for a 5Qt jug! Really! $36.59 if I subscribe... Ridiculous!

Just goes to show WM is a awesome place to buy Oil! If they stock your flavor!

Walmart has the 0W-20 PP and is about $22.50 for 5 qt jug here in MN.

Well back to the old oil debate, while researching today I found interesting info on Pennzoil, the chart Syn had posted ranked PPultra the best in psi ratings but the new ranking puts it # 27 way below ratings he found .# 27 5W30 Pennzoil “Ultra” Platinum, Pure Plus Technology, made from pure natural gas, API SN = 99,039 psi which is still very good, not sure why its now different.
It ranked Pennzoil plat 5-30 at # 66, Im not sure what all this means Im sure these guys can figure it out if. The psi ratings for the 0-30s were lower by a lot more too. I weeded out ones that were not 5-30 syn

34. 0W20 Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, API SN synthetic = 96,364 psi
zinc = 742 ppm
phos = 677 ppm
moly = 81 ppm

35. 5W30 Quaker State Ultimate Durability, API SN synthetic = 95,920 psi
zinc = 877 ppm
phos = 921 ppm
moly = 72 ppm

36. 5W30 Castrol Edge with Titanium, API SN synthetic (gold bottle) = 95,717 psi
zinc = 818 ppm
phos = 883 ppm
moly = 90 ppm
titanium = 44 ppm

38. 5W20 Castrol GTX, API SN conventional = 95,543 psi
zinc = TBD
phos = TBD
moly = TBD
NOTE: The two oils above were tested weeks apart, but due to the similarities in their wear scar sizes, their averages ended up the same.

40. 10W30 Amsoil Z-Rod Oil synthetic = 95,360 psi
zinc = 1431 ppm
phos = 1441 ppm
moly = 52 ppm

42. 5W30 Valvoline SynPower, API SN synthetic = 94,942 psi
zinc = 969 ppm
phos = 761 ppm
moly = 0 ppm

46. 5W20 Valvoline SynPower, API SN synthetic = 94,460 psi
zinc = 1045 ppm
phos = 742 ppm
moly = 0 ppm

48. 5W30 Eneos, API SN, synthetic = 93,135 psi
zinc = TBD
phos = TBD
moly = TBD

49. 5W30 Pennzoil Ultra, API SN synthetic = 92,569 psi
This was the original API SN version, that was NOT made from natural gas.
zinc = TBD
phos = TBD
moly = TBD
The older API “SM” version of this oil, produced a wear protection capability value of 115,612 psi.

53. 5W30 Maxima RS530 Synthetic Racing Oil = 91,162 psi
zinc = 2162 ppm
phos = 2294 ppm

If you live in those extreme temps you should invest in a block heater. Just my 2cents

on the same scale as 2 cents to the dollar, that's about the percentage of cold assed nights we have here, thankfully.:naughty:

RodRam that test was an interesting attempt from a guy trying to gauge film strength, it was a great attempt but many more tests need to be done to validity oils and film strength. The main test we have is used oil analysis's, but even those would pale in comparison to engine tear downs. Bottom line is there is no profit in doing real testing, so big companies aren't going to spend millions of dollars running multiple long term oil users and engine tear downs, so all we get are attempts to find info as opposed to real answers. It is all cool and interesting, but all of these tests are just one of many things to consider. We don't know how much more valuable an oil would be from the high end of those tests to the low end in real world engine applications.

Penzoil Platinum has great Used Oil Analysis numbers.

Thanks Rod for taking the time to post that info..

The actual test was not performed within different variations of engine designs so it is just considered a simple test... I won't lie---->The results were interesting the first time I had seen the test results...
I am also intrigued by the results of the PU 5W-30! {Yes a 30Wt Folks}.... Note the PU he used which finished at the top spot is not todays SN Version.. The PU used was the first SM version!

The first Version of PU {SM Version} had a Magical Base oil and Mystical Additive Package... I guess Shell figured Oh $hit! We don't want to make it this good! Engines might last forever if they are well maintained... Our Government & Automakers stepped in and said-->"Oh He!! No You Don't" {Change It Now}!

Here is the rest of the Testing Information!

https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/2013/06/20/motor-oil-wear-test-ranking/

Thing is-->This Test is Years Old...Companies change their formulas all the time... Everyone of these oil formulas could have changed 3 too 6 times by now... Maybe More! It was awesome at the time...
