As for hot and cold, when oils are cold they protect well obviously huge film strength, but when they are warm is when oils additives or base oils can have a play in lubrication. Vii's need heat to do their magic, the issue with those being in a ticking condition they will shear away with use I'm curious Chris if your issue sounds the same with a fresh oil change as it does well into your interval?
I think it might be a touch quieter now, the current oil has about 2K miles on it. I know PUP has a lot of cleaning capability (like Redline) so maybe it cleaned away whatever was there keeping it quiet and is now plating better? Im still not happy with it, though. Its also still possible that the noise I hear under acceleration has nothing to do with the engine (or at least not anything to do with the engine that oil could fix). But I find it interesting that others have had the same experience...after first oil change all of a sudden the engine is noisier. So what was so different about the factory fill?
I think there is something to the theory that an engine made for 20 weight (hear me out) shouldnt necessarily be run with 30 weight. I do think oil passages, etc are designed for a viscosity and stretching that number could possibly make for issues. PUP 5-30 is pretty light as 30 weights go, but Redline is pretty heavy. Could I mix RL 5-20 and 5-30? Sure, but from all the experience here it seems that straight 5-30 RL is the key.
Like you have mentioned before, we cant quite say for sure what makes the engine quiet. Can add enough additive to bring moly up to RL levels but it doesnt necessarily work. Can try a high PAO oil but there arent very many of them around (thats why I mentioned Mobil 1 EP 0W-20 a couple weeks ago). What else is there to try? It sure would be nice to know for sure what is making the engines quieter. Maybe its just the heavier weight of the RL....but if it is that, are we "fixing" anything or just masking it with heavier oil?
