Better pic

I was just reading about this on the 1500diesel forum and thinking "wow!" because I am a Laramie payload cripple as well- so I have a pretty good idea what your door sticker says. After reading through, you put a ton of thought into this setup- likely still technically overweight- but well thought through. I am sure a few members would like to read about the witchcraft with the pinbox etc :)

didn't read all 45 pages but the heaviest i hauled with my '07 1500 4.7 was my 14x7 enclosed trailer that weighed about 3500lbs. towed it to indy and got about 8 MPG!!!

i haven't hauled anything with my '13 1500 hemi yet but my step-father pulled his 5th wheel camper that weighed 9400lbs with his '08 and '11 1500 and now has a '14 1500 hemi and a different camper that weighs about 9000 lbs and gets about 14 MPG pulling it

Wow pushing the limits! How did it do?

LoL, well that's a great question...... And I wasn't sure a few weeks ago how to answer that.

I only have a few hundred miles on it pulling the camper as of tonight

I can tell you this........ If I hooked this camper to all 3 trucks in my signature
And I let 20 people drive them all 200 miles..... Then tell all 20 people they have to drive from Florida to Alaska pulling this camper with their families.

If none of them knew what class trucks they were....All 20 people would fight to drive the white 1500 3.0

It's the best riding truck in tow I have ever driven, and it handles this camper with absolute ease in everyway.:favorites13:

I just got the truck back from dealer today, the RV shop that installed my new super glide pinched a sensor wire for the air ride and tore a Air shock.

So $1400 later I got that fixed ( system is nitrogen filled ) note to self . Cannot just be unhooked and rehooked up and think all is well.

Ok, back to the Laramie limited - it's not a cripple....... If it's rigged right it's an absolute brute of a towing machine in the kind of comfort most people cannot imagine possible in a truck.

My neighbor is a really good friend of mine ( he is 62 years old and is a brute of a man ) he drives full time ready mix truck for AVR - ( Apple Valley Readymix )

He is their #1 senior driver, - He owns a 2007 2500 Chevy Duramax and has the same size camper I have.

He has been really second guessing my thinking on ordering a 1500 with a 3.0 diesel - we have another friend that drives over the road for Wayne Transport hauling fuel......... He is absolutely positive that I am out of my mind and this will never work ( he has asked on a weekly basis if I got my new truck yet ) it's killing him...... He thinks he knows this won't work.

today after I pulled the camper with the new super glide hitch in the steep hills of county road 50 west bound from treasure island casino to Hampton, down to cannon falls, back on co rd 19 to redwing, then north bound on hwy 61 back past treasure island to co rd 50 again..........

Side Note - I can turn this 5th wheel rig past 90 degrees with a Ram box.

I was amazed ! I went and got my neighbor Gene, the readyMix driver..... I said I want you to drive this truck pulling the camper.

I had him drive the same route...... He was very quiet for about 15 minutes.....the first thing he said was this ( quote ) - I think you made the right choice - end quote.

He said serveral times......... This truck is amazing, Scotts not going to believe this ( he is the over the road driver from Wayne Transport ) he drives a Chevy 8.1 Liter Dually Gas job. ( empty it will rattle your teeth loose ) 5 to 6 miles per gallon towing. ( he also builds his own Mack trucks from the frame up......all he does is pull.

The last thing he said that I remember, was in Redwing leaving a stop light.

Quote - I am not so sure my Duramax can run with this thing.

The 8 speed tranny from a dead stop is absolutly evil when the turbo hits.

In the hills I am pretty sure it cannot hang with his 6.6 Duramax, or my 6.6 duramax, or my 5.9 cummins......... But it will be biting just inches away from the rear bumper. The 8.1 Liter is doomed by the 3.0 turbo diesel

Now a small load behind these 3.0 turbo diesels doesn't make them seem all that impressive......( 5000 lbs type small ) It's when you really load them when they shine.....

Zero to 65 mph from a dead stop with 10,500 lbs the 3.0 liter Ram 1500 3:92 gears with 8 speed auto will blow away all trucks I mentioned in a drag race.

If all trucks were empty I think the 3.0 might be last.....but not by much.

100% agree. The part I was referring to as being a "cripple" was the payload sticker on the door. It is painful. As for towing- the truck is a beast as half tons go.

Oh I understood what you were referring to, and it kinda is crippled if you just slap something behind it and go.

1 Tons are great for this , you can damn near hook anything up without thinking to a 1 Ton and go as long as it has ( enough tongue weight. )

My 3500 Ram has Air ride that can handle 5000 lbs of tongue weight no problem, just hook it up and push a button for the Kelderman air ride and level it and go.

Not the case with a 1/2 ton, especially with factory air ride ( big mistake on my part ) I wish I would have passed on this option. ) but I did't and I worked with it.

I will post pictures of the hitch now and and more tonight with the truck in action.

In the photo above the ride height is not where it will be after the camper suspension and disk brakes are done next week it should be about 1 to 2 inches high and pin box will be adjusted also at that time.

Here is a quick photo of the hitch

What's the pin weight on that camper? It has to be at least 2000 - 2500 lbs. The rear GAWR on these trucks is 3900, and unloaded they carry about 2200.

Your 5er puts the weight on the axle (and some of it does go to the front axle) instead of behind it like a bumper pull, which is great. But it still seems like a lot of weight on that rear axle.

No doubt the drivetrain will pull it ... but will the rest hold up?

The frame can handle way more than the truck is rated for. With the right engine, gears, and suspension, the only weak point is the axle housing itself. Even that is pretty beefy though.

I've pulled 9-10k RVs with it on the hitch. The problem is the flexible sidewalls on the P-series tires and general wandering. Fifth wheel and LT tires might be better. I could see 9-10k on a low shorter trailer though.

Towed my heaviest load today! 9900 LBS tractor and trailer combined. It was just a short drive but the motor seemed to have no trouble! More squat than I'd like even with the Airlift 1000 set at 36 PSI. I have no idea what the tongue weight would be. By the way it's sitting I'd guess 900-1000 lbs. (Comparing to my father's RV which sits about the same with a 950 lb pin)
