Been using a 180 degree stat for years, don't see why it should affect gas mileage.

I hotter engine burns fuel more efficently. It's not going to make a 5mpg difference it'll probably be 1ish if that... But when manufactures build trucks they squeeze what they can out of them.

To answer your question, I wouldn't do it. But how about having the boat shipped down commercially and then pick it up close to the area you want to play at? When done, ship it back. Or skip this year and buy a diesel then do what you like next year..

This is how I understand it also.

BUT...

IF a 200 deg engine loses x amount of power and it takes X amount of extra time to climb a hill (when towing) - then could it be possible that having a cooler engine would actually save you gas?

I suspect it is more about emissions than anything to do with performance.
