Hemi Tick, Causes

So I have heard of this elusive HEMI tick and I think the R/T is infected with it or worse... I've had the tick at start up when cold it goes away but the past few days it has gotten worse.

Its coming from the driver side upper motor area, my first though was exhaust leak but now its showing a code and effects WOT firing. Idle is fine but throws a Code (haven't run the code yet) It sounds like a injector, but also sound like a grounded out coil back or bad spark...

Where do I start or what cause this tick ??? Its driving me nuts and now Ive got issues with the motor.

Top Two Causes of Hemi Tick is Lifters and Exhaust bolt.

How do you know the code is also the cause of your tick? Did they happen simultaneously?

I don't really, the tick just changed tone and doesn't go away now and sounds more like a injector now at idle. I'll know more when I run the code numbers.
but the sound and the code came pretty close to one another

How many miles on the truck, and after initial warm up, how does it run?

For me, I would run the code first at first cold start, then let the engine warm up for 5-10 mins, then turn it off, clear the code, and start it up again to see if it happens again with a nice warm engine.

Its got about 82k on it, it may be time for plugs not sure if they have been done yet, I plan on changing them and all coil packs at the same time.

I'll run the codes tonight. but it runs fine at idle. sounds good and normal... just has a issue at higher rpm and flashes the CEL light to shut her down cause something really wrong is going on.... but I may run some injector cleaner through and see if that helps too. but I have little faith in them products

Well that should be covered by the 100k drivetrain warranty I'd hope.
Its killing me being at work not knowing what it is too!!!

Update, it's throwing a cylinder 3 miss fire. Also won't Rev over 4000 rpm. Still a lifter or dead hole no spark or no fuel?

"Hemi tick" Is way over used. That is not hemi tick. It is just broke. If you don't know if the plugs have been done, take a look at them. If they look fine, swap the plugs to a different cylinder and swap the coil to another cylinder. See if the code follows to the other cylinder. That will tell you if it is one of those things or something else.

That's my plan when I get a chance. I'm pretty sure it's spark related

Given that it wont go over 4k rpm, I wonder if you've collapsed a lifter on 3? It trashes the cam when that happens...

Every possible noise under the hood has been called the "Hemi Tick',,, IMHO, the only ~true~ 'Hemi Tick' that might exist is injector noise, as everything else can be altered/corrected. Folks hear the phrase and automagically connect it to their ailment,,, Only natural, I suppose, but heck, even my 2013 Honda F6B has 'Hemi Tick' when it comes to the injectors,,, :roflsquared:

Distinct possibility,,, Kinda what it 'feels' like,,, Hopefully, it's something different / easier / less time consuming to correct,,,

Yeah I hope so, if its anything the oil touches its covered under my 100k drivetrain, anything else its on me... I'll pull off the coil tonight test the cyl for compression, inspect all the spark plugs and test the coil. I've read alot of what it could be and most lean to the crappy injectors in these motors, I'm still thinking injector...
Having broke vehicles drives me nuts... especially when I don't have the time to deal with them.

Oh and I've read elsewhere that while in park a hemi wont rev over 4k, so I gues that explains that.. still seems kinda odd that it would have a rev limiter in park.

replace that coil and see where that goes. mine did this a while back and I got the misfire code. engine was rough and had a NASTY miss. I replaced that coil and all the plugs and it performed MUCH MUCH better. I still feel a slight miss when under power now but no codes thrown. I plan to replace my coil packs one by one just in case.

That does change the 'overall equation' as I don't believe you mentioned not being able to rev over 4k before 'while in PARK' ,,,,,,,,,

Yes, the engine is rev-limited in Park.

Does anyone have the testing procedure for a injector and coil to test resistance and faults by any chance?

I just want to rule out those items before taking it to the dealer to have a lifter replaced.

I was reading alot last night and i find it odd that its cyl 3 and a lifter issue when the mds doesn't shut down cyl #3. But once I get some tools on it and a ohmn meter I'll figure out more if nothing shows up on a visual inspection and a comp test of cyl 3.

I really hope it isn't a lifter, can those be service without removing the head or in intake or both? or must the head come off? I don't knoe the structural make up of these motors, so I'm just learning the ins and out of them.

sorry for all the ???'s but will these work on their own or will I need a box?

they list them for my truck but say they work with a 6a box but I'm not sure if the box is needed or how to even wire it into the truck as MSD doesn't offer one for the 2011 or give any info on it.

You are jumping to all kinds of conclusion based off stuff you are reading online without doing any diag. Simply move the plugs and coils to different cylinder to see if the misfire follows. If it does, that will tell you what is wrong. You already said it is due for a tune. It could just be a lack of proper maintenance that is causing your troubles. If the mis stays on cylinder 3, simply take it to the dealer if you still have power train warranty. If it is a lifter problem, the intake manifold and cylinder head will have to come off.
