Figured I would report my mpg on a 3 hour trip to southern Ohio to the Hocking hills region. My truck is a ccsb 4x4 2500 with 4.10 gears. My straight highway mpg was 18-18.5 mpg evic showed 19.5 it is proud by 1mpg. My mixed in the hills was 13-14. This was on 89 octane. Truck also has a truxedo truxport bed cover. Was hauling about 300lbs of gear along with the 2 kids and wife. So truck was around 7800 lbs.

I can't get mine over 16-17. I run 87 though so I may try a tank of premium.

I have the same setup, I've been keeping up from the time I bought it a few weeks ago until now, I ran 87 Octane and just started putting in 89 Octane trying to see any different. I went on a 200+ round trip doing to memorial day weekend and got 17.3 mpg, they was some hills here in Pacific Northwest.

Yeah, they get great MPG's on 100% highway use at speed limit speeds. Drops like a brick though the second you get off the highway.

I even got 20 MPG one time on the EVIC "lie-o-meter" (probably 19 MPG real) but soon as I got off the highway and what little town traffic to get home, the average dropped considerably.

I also have had great MPG experiences with long distance highway speeds with the 6.4.

The MPGs on this truck blow my mind compared to the HD gassers of a decade ago. You were lucky to see 10 on the highway with a Chevy 8.1 or Ford V10.... and didn't Dodge have a V10 also? If so, I doubt it was any better.

As much as a **** and moan about the price of gas and regulations the auto manufacturers really have delivered some amazing efficiency in response to the high fuel cost and/or regulations. And it's not just the trucks - I've traveled a bit lately and had some rentals. It seems that any car these days, even larger ones, get upwards of 25 on the highway.

Our 98 Ram V10 wasn't much better, but damn did it have some bottom end for a gas motor. 450ftlbs @ 2400 rpm.

I had an '04 Chebby w/8.1 and it got 8 mpg pulling my box trailer. I have not towed it enough with this truck to gauge it, but, honestly, I fear it may not do a whole lot better.

Bought new a 2005 F250 with a 5.4 3V gasser. Averaged maybe 9-10 MPG's at best. Had one time I got a touch over 14 MPG but that was hypermiling like a **** to squeak that out.

These trucks are way better today in that regard for certain.

Sorry guys. Got busy here. Truck is bone stock no tunes never had a factory flash yet truck has around 4500 miles on it. I run 89 octane all the time WTH right. The speeds were mostly around 65-70mph. Hit 75 for short periods of time. There are not a lot of highways that have 70 mph speed limits around columbus and we were not on route 33 where it turns to 70 for very long. Yes getting off the highway the mpg drops fast. I came from a 2005 3v v10 that got 10 mpg no matter what it was doing. So this mpg is great! I was baffled to see this great mileage. I will take it.

I remember test driving one of those years ago with the Allison transmission, man that thing had some massive power.

Empty and at moderate speeds is where our MDS equipped 6.4 shine through. The old V10s and GM 8.1 would likely be better towing motors equipped with a 6 speed. Their power came on at lower RPM.

Towing, MPG is probably within 1-2 mpg across the board from chevy 6.0 through 8.1 and all displacement truck motors between. Stop and go traffic, towing or and 80+ mph and MDS is not kicking in as much if at all.

For a 2500 gasser I was pleasantly surprised coming from 2 ecoboost F150. I didn't believe the 20+ hype with the EB so I wasn't disappointed. It still got 2-3 mpg better hwy than my 5.4l F150 did, about the same in town. The 6.4l will beat the numbers my 5.4l did on the highway by 1-2mpg, around town it's 1-2 less. Better all around than the wife's old Mountaineer. I don't know if it was her driving or the vehicle, but that thing would manage 13.8 highway when she'd drive anywhere.

For me it seems 72mph is a threshold. After that mileage falls off quickly.

Yeah I had a '98 Ram 2500 with a V-10, and the best I ever got was 10mpg. The worst I ever got (driving) was 9mpg. I would get about 5mpg while plowing, but that's a whole different kind of use.

Even though I got ****** mileage in my V-10, I still loved that truck. The only way you knew you had a load in the box, or hooked up behind you, was when you tried to hit the brakes. That truck was my firewood hauler, and it was sweet. Ended up blowing the intake manifold gasket, and it wasn't worth fixing.

I just did a trip from Orlando to Tallahassee and back this weekend with a fair amount of driving in Tallahassee. Hand calced,y average was 15.5mpg including some use of 4x4, and most of the trip home being run over 80mph, with probably 20 miles at 90mph. For what they are, these trucks do great on gas.

so what is the general consensus with the 6.4 and Mid grade (89 Octane) vs. Regular? First, does the 6.4 need to be run on 89 oct or is regular ok? And second... Better mileage with 89?

Cliff notes is the engine adjusts the timing when it senses the 87 octane over the 89 and makes slightly less power. If you tow, you want the 89 octane more than the 87.

As far as mileage, I have seen nothing definitive that gives any increase using 89 over 87 when fuel costs are factored in. For daily driving that does not involve heavy load hauling or towing, 87 is were the math makes sense.
