I've had 2x4 trucks in the past and they were ok. I did the weight in the bed thing and got by when that was all I could afford. I did get stuck on wet grass in my yard and winters plain sucked. Yes you can get by but they sucked. Backing my tt up a gravel campsite I spun in 2x4. Pulled that lever down to 4 hi and she crawled right up.

In my area 2x4 trucks are about worthless as **** on a boar hog. In my mind, better to have and not need than need and not have. I've been in situations with my trailers that without 4x4 I'd have been hosed. To each their own though. Also after my first awd vehicle, a Honda crv, I'll always have awd as long as I can afford it. It just makes winter driving so much less stressful. You have to be careful, but it takes away a lot of the anxiety as Your sitting at work watching snow pile up wondering if you'll make it home....just my .02

I think ppl get it for resale.

The 2k you pay for it upfront - you still retain it when you sell it, and its a little easier sell - more sought after better optioned truck.

Well, I bought a 4X2 anyway, but the quadcab, to help with resale if and when. I'll keep my eye on the winter tire threads.

For me, it came down to value for money. Since 95% of my driving is highway to work, and 4% of my driving is on gravel roads where I wouldn't engage 4x4 anyways, I had to make a choice. With a limited budget (around 15k) I could get a 2015 4x2 with 50k miles, or something like a 2010 (or older) 4x4 with 100k+ miles. I opted for a warranty and newer features. I'm probably in a situation once per year where I would prefer to have 4WD. Even then, I have friends with 4x4 that can come along with me.

Not trying to talk anyone down from getting a 2wd, money is money, and it also can be a personal choice to save the money.

I use 4wd anytime I have rain or snow. If I only used it for snow, it would only get about 5-10 days of use per year. Using it in rain makes it a year-round option.

Here in North Texas a 4x2 is just fine. That's what I had for years until my wife and I started going back to Kentucky for Christmas to visit relatives. I bought a 2011 1500 4x4 and it paid for itself when we were caught in a bad storm coming back from Cincinnati. Cars and trucks were sliding down hills while I powered up them. So, I got 4wd on my 2016 2500.

So yes, I basically spent 3-4k for something I use once a year. But when I need it, it's worth it!

up here in Canada I went with the 4x4 Big Horn-in winter I just set it to 4wd Auto and let the computer decide when to kick in the front wheels. It works beautifully, going up slick hills I feel it turn on instantly and without it -there is no way I would make it up the hill-not in a straight line or in my own lane -I don't use full time 4wd unless the snow is deep or roads are iced over. Love my RAM!!!

I really couldn't see myself owning a truck without 4x4. Or a V8. Do I NEED either of them all the time? Of course not. But a vehicle purchase is a big purchase and I'd like to be happy with my choice. I use the 4x4 in the rain just as an added precaution and I rev my engine and pull out to impress my fiancee. Ok the last parts not true I do it to impress myself! But anyways, I think some good points have been made on both sides, it really comes down to what you want and what you can afford. I didn't realize the price difference you were looking at for 4x4 and 4x2. Economically it makes sense but it's all up to you. It's your truck! Post up pics

All good points for sure, no doubt. There is nothing wrong with a 2wd truck that's for sure. I'd only offer that regardless of whether you think you need it or not or if where you live has snow or not or whatever, if you find yourself in a situation where you need it to get home, or if heaven forbid you get off the road on some stormy night, late in a remote area with your wife and kids with you and you are stuck, spinning in 2wd and your options are put it in 4wd if you have it and make it home, call for a tow truck and hope one comes quickly or take your chances and get out and start walking for help (and if you have to choose that option I hope your a CCW permit holder), I think you'd pay the cost difference for 4wd in a heartbeat.

Stuff happens when you least expect it. You may never need 4wd or never leave asphalt, but if something happened and having 4wd was the difference between life and death, in that instance I think you'd be willing to pay double any cost difference for 4wd. I try to plan for the unforeseeable. I'm a former LEO and have seen a lot. A lot I hope my kids never have to see.

Again this is all my opinion. I'm not arguing either way. Not suggesting if you choose 2wd your wrong. Not at all. It's a personal choice, these are just some of the reasons I choose the way I did, for anyone considering a new truck.

Have A good Tuesday guys.

By that logic, I'm screwed anyway. I don't have a CCW, or a real gun of any kind, nor do I plan on getting one. I did enough with guns while in the AF, and didn't particularly enjoy it.

I also don't have a boat - you know, in case it floods again. Nor do I have life vests in the house in lieu of a boat.

Wait, I don't have shark repellent, or a shark suit in case I fall out of the boat during the flood. Or more likely in my case, gator repellent.

Better stock up on tin foil for making hats out of in case the UFOs come...

Yes, getting a bit silly, but you can't plan and buy for every contingency. Sure, there might come a day when 4x4 could save my life. There could also come a day when I get hit by lightning while being mauled by a bear. Not likely, but it could happen. Most decisions in life are playing the odds. Do I get an extended warranty? Do I need a Crew, or will a quad work? Do I really need the Hemi? Or is MPG more important than raw HP? Do I marry the woman even though she's a psycho, but has a great body?

Sorry, got a little carried away there. No offense meant.

I have a unique use for my 4X4. I tow my Ram behind my motor home and need the 4X4 to be able to tow four wheels down. Same reason SWMBO has a 4X4 Expedition, that way we can tow either one behind the motor home.
Live in central TX so no real need for the 4X4, unless I go off road.

I live in Florida with no snow and I hardly ever go in mud and hardly ever pull a trailer and I have a 2wd and times I have taken it off-road hasn’t done me wrong.8d2cec2cc8f9d7b65d53deaa25a5bdcd.jpge42142105f675e289965c6cbc5c0aac9.jpg

I have heard of a number of guys on here adding the "anti-spin" or limited slip differential, but am guessing that's not an inexpensive modification. I wish the dealers ordered more trucks with the anti-spin rear option. I couldn't find one in my price range.
