So my wife are empty-nesters and it's time to replace the old minivan either this year or next year. Something like the Jeep Grand Cherokee is attractive. Any thoughts on it or a good alternative. Will mainly be highway/street driving but also want something that will handle gravel/hills for visiting our son.

Well, my parents drove a succession of Grand Cherokees for over 20 years until last year. They went to buy a new one and found that the latest design sucks so bad in so many ways that they ended up buying a Ford. Just my 2 cents...

My wife has a 2018 GC Trailhawk and absolutely loves it.
Frankly, I could see myself getting one (with the Hemi of course).
It's pretty capable, plenty of towing, and the air suspension is awesome.
Also, her 3.6 Pentastar and the 8spd is plenty fast but her mileage is only about 21mpg (combined) but that's not terrible for an SUV...
6,000 lb. towing with the factory tow package is pretty good for a mid-sized too.

Been looking at getting rid of my wifes's 2016 Explorer recently for a JGC or the new body style Explorer. Lot of value there for the money on the Grand Cherokee although the new Explorer has definitely stepped up its game. Love the fact that they're both RWD. Unfortunately all of my local CDJR dealers are crooked as hell so I'll have to drive a few miles to find a reputable one.

Wife has a 2020 Grand Cherokee and she loves it. She use to have a Chrysler 200 so that was the biggest change for her, going from a car to a SUV.

My wife has a 2020 Grand Cherokee and she loves it. It's our second one, the first was a 2017. It rides smooth and it's very comfortable for long trips. It gets great mileage and the 3.6 has a good amount of power when paired to the 8 speed.

I had a 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk but got rid of it due to the oil filter housing cracking twice (and a bunch of transmission problems didn't help the situation either). It's located between the upper manifold and the motor block, so it's a pita to replace it. The filter housing itself is made from some kind of plastic which is some designed engineering failure.

Just a heads up, and I'm not sure if they've addressed the issue or not by now. Here's a thread on the topic and there's some relatively recent activity:

Guys; "cherokee" is not the same car as "grand cherokee". The latter is so much better in every way.

I had a 2012 grand cherokee and still miss it. These things are killer, with the same powertrain as the Ram's (so hemi + 8 speed, or 3.6 + 8 speed, or ED with 8 speed), air ride, they are a little heavy compared to other SUV's that are the same size, but ride so much better and have an amazing 4x4 system. Turn radius is incredible putting many smaller cars to shame.

They are extremely solid at this point as they've been making this model since 2010 (as a 2011 model). Designed and built on the Mercedes platform when Jeep was still owned by Daimler.

I had a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the eco-diesel engine. It was a really nice vehicle.

I wasn't sure about posting about the regular Cherokee's problems, but figured there might be some cross-over with the designs. Probably not an issue with the Grand's. I was looking at the SRT's but was a little off-put by my situation with the Trailhawk.

We just got a 2020 Limited with the Pentastar. It is a very nice vehicle. The 3.6 has a mapping issue that causes it to surge, even at highway speeds, and it is magnified by the cruise control, which could use some smoothing in its own programming. Some may not notice it, but it drives me crazy. It is also a common complaint on the Wrangler forums(same powertrain), so I am not alone, and Chrysler does not seem to be addressing it. Also, the throttle by wire is programmed too soft at throttle tip-in, but in Sport Mode it is extremely twitchy, so that is no remedy. It's still nice, and my wife likes it. I do now regret not getting the Hemi.

We would be looking at something that has the 3.6L, the off-road adventure package, 18 inch wheels, heated/cooled seats. Possibly a Limited level. There are so many trim levels listed that it takes a while to compare them; except for eliminating the highest cost ones.

The Limited trim level is the "upper middle" level and comes very nicely equipped for the money

That's another gripe, the Limited has heated seats, but NOT ventilated. That sux in AZ.

Luxury Group II has ventilated from seats.
Yes, but it forces you into the panoramic sunroof, and other superfluous stuff that I didn't want. I should have clarified that. I wish I could have deleted the standard hole in the roof.
